A mostly single path fairly rugged trail with limited views until you reach the top of the hill (approximately a 40 minute walk). Best hiked early in the day to avoid summer heat. Dogs, horses and bicycles are prohibited (there is a dog park just to the south "Ernest Holman Memorial Dog Park"). Mountain lions do exist in this area (~75) and one of their prey, a deer, was spotted on the hike. In sharp contrast to, but only a short distance from, the bustling Sonoma square area.

The Sonoma Overlook Trail is a great trail to hike and get a great view of the town of Sonoma. The surrounding landscape view is great and the entire loop trail up and back to the parking area is about two miles total. There are also a few other trails that connect to the loop trail for those that wish to hike longer.

Amazing view from the top! For those that didn’t make it to the top (and agree it can be hot in summer or slippery in rain), you missed the jewel at the end! Pro-tip, you can extend the hike as it connects with Monitini Preserve across Norrbom Road and makes a nice circuit with the bike path.

The Sonoma Overlook Trail is a fantastic hike for nature enthusiasts and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The trail offers a unique combination of breathtaking views, challenging terrain, and rich biodiversity.

One of the highlights of the Sonoma Overlook Trail is the panoramic views it offers of the surrounding valley and mountains. The trail winds its way up to an overlook point that provides a 360-degree view of the valley, including the Mayacamas Mountains, Mount Tamalpais, and the San Francisco Bay. The views are simply spectacular and make the hike well worth the effort.

In addition to the views, the Sonoma Overlook Trail offers a moderate level of difficulty, making it a great option for hikers of all levels. The trail is a 4.4 mile round trip hike, with a total elevation gain of about 1,000 feet. The trail is well-maintained, but it does have some steep sections that will challenge even the most experienced hikers.

Another great aspect of the Sonoma Overlook Trail is the diverse array of plant and animal life that can be found along the way. The trail passes through a variety of different habitats, including oak woodlands, chaparral, and grasslands, providing an opportunity to see a wide variety of plants and animals. Some of the species that can be found along the trail include oak trees, manzanita, wildflowers, and various bird species.

In addition to the natural beauty and the physical challenge, the Sonoma Overlook Trail offers a sense of tranquility and peace that is hard to find in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The trail is not crowded and it's a great place to get away from it all and enjoy some solitude.

All in all, the Sonoma Overlook Trail is an excellent hike that offers something for everyone. The combination of breathtaking views, challenging terrain, and rich biodiversity make it a must-do hike for anyone visiting the area. It's a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the beauty of nature at...

As a long time sonoms resident i've hiked the hills of sonoma valley for years, about 48 or so, one day a group got together and said this is our trail you can't be here, then they said no dogs no bikes and no access to anything other than the trail itself. Now it seems they have gone a step to far by placing a series of steps that serve no purpose other than keeping anyone with walking impairment off the trail as steps are not easy to climb, I doubt they meet any code as far as public safety goes either. people should think about others before taking it upon themselves to make decisions that affect everyone ,And if your interested those trails are on a giant rubble pile, left from when it was a quarry used to rebuild after the big quake and the trails have existed since with very little harm to anything.in fact there are many roads and trails to discover in the area, but they would have people confined to a single trail and miss all that's going on...
