Uggh... I hate to throw any shade at the Y. I think they're doing a good job for what they do. But all I can say is, it certainly wasn't for me.
The staff are courteous enough. The facility is clean enough.
But they seem to be missing the intangibles that make for a great workout experience. The weight room is really all I care about, and it is just not great. The colors/ambiance are dull and uninspiring to a workout. It just looks like a "facility", like a hospital, school, or prison. It doesn't make me want to be there. There is no music playing. I have no idea why. This further saps the energy out of the room.
While they have a large selection of machines, it's awkward using them because they seem to always be taken. And if you catch a free one, you really need to have been eyeing it for a bit beforehand to make sure someone isn't just between sets or getting a quick water. So it leaves you with an awkward feeling.
There aren't enough of the machines to satisfy the demand, esp. the squat racks.
I usually start with a couple laps around the track as a warmup. At times the air in there has been so humid and stifling. Not sure how clean, fresh, cool air isn't a top priority. Usually it was decent enough, however.
I decided one day to try out some other "features", so I went to the pool. It was already at max capacity. So I decided I'd try out the whirlpool. It was maxed out. I decided I'd try the sauna... same thing: full.
There is just nothing about this place that "calls to me". I quit while I still had a week left on my membership and couldn't even force myself to go. If the membership was free, I still wouldn't go back.
Now in all fairness, I know several neighbors who go there and are satisfied with it. But I did not enjoy my time there one iota. (It's...
Read moreThe child care for the babies is horrible! (Toddler section is okay) My sister and I took our babies there thinking that they would be in safe hands, but only found that our babies were given very minimal attention even when they were crying or uncomfortable! We then brought it to the Child care directors attention but she took the leaders word over ours saying we should had let her know. As if the leader of the daycare didn’t see anything wrong with babies crying on the floor and not being held or attended to!My baby was crying at one ladys feet and she wasn’t even trying to pick him up, instead she offered to change my nieces diaper while her mother was already there taking care of her. On top of all that they left my precious 7 month old niece in the stroller with no buckle on for the whole two hours and also she was in a bouncer for two hours on a whole different day. Somehow the leader that’s there didn’t see anything wrong with these situations and according to Madison we’re supposed to bring it to the leaders attention? Also why isn’t there any protocol on bringing sick kids to daycare? They get the healthy kids sick!! let me just add that The workers there should not be allowed to bring their own babies if they cannot give proper attention to the other babies that are stressed and needing help. At least call the parent instead of waiting a whole hour to do so, I could had tended to him much quicker. Come on Y you can do better than that. Get a better staff to care for these...
Read moreThe staff has been nothing but amazing since day 1. They are always kind, understanding, and helpful. Everyone does their job and is happy to do so. They do not judge or profile.
One of my favorite things is that they have cucumber lemon water everyday!
I understand the economy is rough but I felt bad when I saw one of the lifeguards with ripped swimming trunks but he was still content doing his job. I humbly suggest YMCA branded lifeguard shorts. I wish I had enough to be able to purchase some for him.
I enjoy the hot tub! Where you can chat with people from different walks of life. A variety of people who call this gym home. There are people who work in forestry to office workers and more!
The sauna is amazing. There was a guy who was so focused it was admirable! Like he was about to catch a fly with chopsticks type focus.
The Zumba & Water aerobics classes are amazing! Everyone is encouraging and welcoming. The instructors are friendly and enthusiastic.
Another aspect of this gym that I enjoy is that they are their own little microcosm. They hold events that help Spartanburg get healthy! They have events where you can learn how to improve your health. On the rare chance that the gym is closed, the rail trail is located right behind!
The gym also hosts 1 mile runs for kids, 5 mile, Triathlon, and more.
This is the best gym I have been to in Spartanburg hands down! They are...
