Spartanburg is pretty much a "desert" when it comes to Indian food. Fortunately, De Flavors of India is here to offer a delightful sampling of Indian cuisine. The menu is primarily composed of vegetarian and chicken-based dishes - no lamb, at this time. Be advised that this establishment is take-out only, which is fine for me. The order was ready as promised and well packaged for transport back to the house. For this first visit we ordered Achari Chicken (medium), Bagara Chicken (medium) and Butter Chicken (mild). I have seen some reviews regarding the spiciness of the dishes. One must simply request the level of spiciness one wants at the time of the order. I found the medium with ample heat for my tasted buds. The more adventuresome or experience diner may want to step up one more level. I must note that even with the mild option, the spiciness is sufficient for even the most timid of diners of Indian food. All three dishes we selected were excellent. As Butter Chicken appears to be a menu staple, we opted for two other dishes that we had not previously tasted. Both the Achari and Bagara chicken were excellent, with the Achari tending more toward to sharper (read acidic) end of the tasting spectrum and the Bagara providing warmer tones given the differences in the ingredients. Also, both were good in the medium option for spice that did not overpower but complemented the dishes. We look forward to dining again and sampling other menu options. Pleased that we have a restaurant offering authentic...
Read moreI'm having a real hard time rating the restaurant bc I've had fantastic Indian food elsewhere, but I'm concerned that it's unfair to compare De Flavors to restaurants like Delhi Darbar in Lucan, Co. Dublin, Ireland. But in the end I decided that if I can find FANTASTIC Indian food in unexpected places like Ireland, Luleå Sweden, Milan Italy, and Cheyenne Wyoming, then the same standard should apply in Spartanburg, SC. Three stars are because the food is good enough but not executed the way I'd expect in relation to the price. The price is higher than expected for the quantity and quality combination. The samosa was a hand pie... Although it was a vegetable samosa, there was one single pea inside. The flavor wasn't bad, but there was no vegetable content. Additionally, the crust was pie crust, unlike any other samosa I've had. The naan was store bought. I'm fairly certain it was pita bread bc it tasted exactly the same as what I buy in Sam's Club, excerpt they've added garlic, butter, and salt... A little too much salt actually. Lastly, there was butter chicken. It was tasty and if I order again, I'll get it again, but it paled in comparison to the 5 star places I've eaten at. The proprietors are extremely nice and friendly and I hope they continue to improve on their fare. For Spartanburg, this is the best you're gonna get, and it's good for that...
Read moreI received the wrong order and did not realize the mistake until I was home. Went ahead and ate this order. Or, tried to.
The dish lacked authenticity in terms of flavor. I have eaten a great deal of Indian food in numerous USA cities and internationally. Based on those experiences, De Flavors missed the mark.
I really want De Flavors of India to succeed because Spartanburg needs am Indian restaurant. Hopefully, they will work out the kinks, focus on fresh ingredients, and tweak their recipes to create top-notch authentic Indian dishes.
EDIT: When you gave me the food, you already had it in a bag. You read the order slip to me but never opened the containers. I told you the order was correct except we ordered plain Naan and you read off Garlic Naan. You went to the kitchen and quickly returned with the correct Naan. I suppose the next time I should have you open the containers to confirm the order matches the actual food. Also, you comment about "expert advise" seems a bit snippy. My review never mentioned me being an expert - I am not. Yet, I know good Indian food from mediocre (yours is mediocre at best). I think you should listen carefully to your customers opinions. There are GREAT Indian restaurants in Greenville - an...
