Love this park. ❤❤❤ (This and the nearby Seneca/Cherokee Parks are my favorites. I have been going to all since I was a child.)
Brown Park is a beautiful, large open grass land and partially wooded park with walking trails throughout. It is centrally located in the heart of St. Matthews, and is so close to everything that makes St. Matthews wonderful. It is beautiful in every season, with the many trees and small wildlife. A central feature of the park is the creek that flows through the middle of the park, and always a special treat is to see the many ducks and geese that are so much a part of St. Matthews, that everyone loves to see and feed. An absolutely magical time at Brown Park is every holiday season when Light Up St. Matthews occurs. It is always the first weekend of December and is a wonderful event for families beginning the holiday season.
One reason my family always makes sure to attend is because pets are welcomed to the Light Up, and we always take our dogs in their stroller. It's wonderful to be able to share this celebration with them, creating family memories; when it is so hard to find public holiday events pets are able to attend. We always make sure to first stop by the local Starbucks nearby on Shelbyville Rd and pick up seasonal holiday drinks to take with us to keep warm with, because the nights can get chilly waiting for the...
Read moreYear round this is a good park for walking on the circular paved trails and checking out the local flora and fauna. Especially ducks and geese since multiple areas of the trail are within viewing distance of tributaries of Beargrass Creek. There is a good sized playground that is very well maintained. The parking lot is close to the play area, convenient for unloading children and strollers, etc. However my favorite feature of the park is the two holiday activities that are offered annually. In October the St. Matthews Chamber of Commerce hosts a Halloween Trick or Treat event. It is generally held on the Saturday before Halloween so it's like an entire bonus trick or treating experience for the kids. There are MANY booths placed throughout the park on the trails where local businesses, non-profits, schools and others give out candy. Closer to the playground there are bounce houses and inflatables. It's free and the candy haul is BIG. The next fun seasonal event is Christmas at Brown Park. It is not a one time event but rather a multiple week long extravaganza of fantastic Holiday/Christmas lights and decorations. Also free, the decorations get more elaborate every year. I'm not exactly certain of the dates (so don't hold me to them firmly) but I believe the decorations go up after Thanksgiving and stay up until...
Read moreI love Brown Park! I take my Yorkie, 2-3 times a week. They replaced all the black, crumbling walkways with concrete and made them wider so people don't have to stop to get out of the way. They have short walks and long walks depending on what you want. The ducks and geese are always fun to watch especially in the spring when they have their little baby goslings they're so adorable even though the parents hissit you to keep you away. An eagle scout did a project and he put a dispenser of pellet food for the ducks? it's only a quarter and you get a little bit in your hand to throw to the ducks. He also has a sign up explaining why you shouldn't feed the Ducks bread. Go and see it now at Christmas because they have the whole upper part of the park up lit beautifully. Lots of people there and kids playing on the gym equipment. Everyone's smiling and happy. Everyone at the park...
