As an experienced group with some of our members having done 40+ rooms around the northeast (and two other rooms this afternoon), we were expecting so much more from this room than what we got. For reference we played the lighthouse room.
First the GOOD: the staff was friendly and accommodating when booking over the phone, as well as at arrival to the location. The aesthetics of the game were on theme and well done. Unfortunately that’s about it for the pros.
Now for the NEGATIVES: the design of the game incorporated many things (even some puzzles - what the hell was the mirror and scrimshaw all about?) that didn’t pertain at all to the game and were simply meant to waste your time. I’ll try to describe our experience without giving spoilers. The first room had a puzzle that we solved very early on but had no indication it was solved, so when we went to the second room, we were constantly looking for solutions to the puzzle in the first room hoping it would give us something we needed to move on. We were told after the game that there was a mishap with one of the props on that puzzle, which “has never happened before”.
The second room of the game also had some tools that were not functioning properly and required us to have someone come in and fix them, thereby breaking our immersion in the game. The second room then had a puzzle that was way out of theme for a light house room and was admittedly put into the room as something 95% of people couldn’t solve without a clue. This puzzle completely ruined the game for us as we enjoy playing rooms with no clues and to have a puzzle that basically forces you to use a clue is just dumb in an escape room.
Next let’s talk about the clue delivery system. When you do use the clue, you are required to go to the first room and push a button and wait for your game host to come in the room. He then does the puzzle for you! Honestly what the hell is that about? These games are meant to be immersive and thought provoking. Having someone come in to solve a puzzle that you are not meant to be able to solve on your own is just ridiculous. The entire second room was not a good experience.
On to the last room. There was a puzzle that you basically had to solve with no clue attached to it before you could get an answer. Maybe we were just tired and frustrated at that point , however every puzzle should have some form of clue to get you started, since this isn’t a mind reading experience.
We usually do every room at a location once we start, and figured we would do the same here, however we likely won’t based on the steep price, poor puzzle progression and faulty props. Really wish we had a better experience since we drove 90 minutes for the room. I hope your experience differs from ours.
update following owner response I really wish all the Boy Scouts and sailors that I know could have made it to the room so they could have solved the gimmick puzzle in room 2 for us. Also I don’t really see how having a smug hipster dressed in steampunk attire coming into the room and doing a puzzle for us is really on theme with a lighthouse. The clue system is lame and others on your reviews have mentioned the same. It’s lazy and uninventive. Nobody says you need a television set in the room as there are many other clue delivery systems that don’t break immersion. What about the giant red countdown clock, is that part of the theme as well or are we supposed to ignore that because it’s convenient for that application. My advice is to learn how to take constructive criticism and adapt your rooms instead of being condescending to your customer base. We have done nearly all the rooms in CT and have consulted on the construction of other rooms. Sometimes an outside perspective is important when the owner is too...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars for customer service I would. I am here visiting my sister and we arrived for a 5:45 reservation on a Saturday night. When we arrived they said they have no more reservations and closing for the day…. At 5:45 when their closing time stated on google is not until 8 pm. The woman at the front desk was less than helpful. She told us we had booked the wrong date. I completely understand I made a mistake and the website is very difficult to navigate, this seems to be a common theme here. Since they had no more reservations and their closing time is 8 pm you would think a business would be able to fit us in that day. The only thing she offered was a “credit”. I let her know my mom and I are flying back home tomorrow and if I could please have a refund. She refused and when I asked if there was a manager or owner I could speak with she said he doesn’t care about you and he’s keeping your money. “He does this to customers all the time” were her exact words. I was genuinely appalled. This must be a scam that this operation runs to make booking the reservation extremely difficult online and then when people make a common error they keep your $100+ and tell you too bad go kick rocks. Although I cannot speak on the actual escape room, I’m sure it would have been a fun time for me and my family had there been any accommodations for the staff. I can speak on the absolutely horrific customer service from the front desk women Fiona, and this reflects a business enough. Moral of the story triple check the booking if you are brave enough to come here, this company has zero regard for their customers and lies about operating hours on google. Sketchy location as well, as we were sitting on the curb waiting for our Uber we saw the front desk lady and two young kids all get into one car. We never saw any customers come in or out of the building. This business is either a front or a scam and I’ll be following up with the better business bureau about this establishment. I will follow up and remove this review if I can receive a refund. Very...
Read moreTwo weeks ago I was in mystic for my bachelorette party and we had booked an escape room at mystified and were all super excited for it. Unfortunately, on the way there, I had a medical emergency on the way. We arrived early and my maid of honor went in to speak to the employee to explain the situation. We wanted to participate but given the medical emergency, would not be able to. The employee informed my MOH that we would have had to cancel 24 hrs in advance. My MOH asked if there were any other solutions as we were there on time and wanted to participate but due to a medical emergency, we’re not able to. They were fully booked for the day and did not have other times for us to come in, which we understood. However when asked if we would be able to receive a refund, we were told no but that a gift card may be possible. My MOH explained that we lived 2 and a half hours away so that wouldn’t make much sense for us but we would take what we could get. We were told to send an email and they would get back to us. They ended up not even giving us a gift card and did nothing to help us out, so unfortunately we were out the money for the escape room. Very disappointed in their lack of customer service Given we were there and wanted to participate if it weren’t for the...
