Half Price Books — Attraction in Sugar Land

Actually there was not a -star so this 1 star should be a -star because this business establishment is nothing but a bunch of lying crooks and I want to explain why I called them lying crooks. Before I sold my books to this business I did a little walk through and asked the employees several questions about how the book selling process works and what kind of pricing and value I would get for selling my books because not all books are the same. I asked how much money college textbooks were at sell back and I asked about 1st edition books and rare books, they never gave me a straight answer on anything which was really awkward because they buy back books everyday on every kind of books. Well the only way to find out is to sell my books and find out. The next day I came in with 2 big long boxes of various books like textbooks and a lot of different great books like 1st edition fiction and nonfiction books cook books. They told me to walk around and they would call me when they have a offer, I figured I had at least 100 books and it would take a while, 5 mins later they called me for a offer....O.M.G....i was not looking to get rich selling my old books but I thought at least I would get maybe 25cents per dollar per book it was no where near that. I spent thousands on my college books and favorite collectible books and they offered me $22.78 for 2 full boxes of very good books, basically they gave me about .03 cents to .05 cents per book no matter what book it was. I had checked the buy back prices for my books from places like amazon and other businesss and half price books’ offer was no where near competitive. I had a lot of 1st edition books that were worth a lot of money had I sold it on eBay but they offered me .03 cents per book. All the employees at half price books know what valuable books customers are bringing in to sell instead of being honest and giving customers a decent buy back price they keep quiet and process every book like it’s a average old book not worth anything but .03 cents. I see the employees and managers look at each other when they get a valuable book in and they scam their customers out of a decent profit. I called and asked about a particular 1st edition book and how much it would cost me to buy it from them, they gave me a very high quote over the phone and the next day I bring in the same 1st edition book to sell they offered me .03 cents saying this book is old and not in demand....basically every customer that brings in books to sell to this business we are supplying there inventory books for these lying crooks to sell and getting rich from. Everyone who is reading this review you are better off selling your books online like Ebay or amazon or better yet donate your books to a charity or church than sell your good books to half price books full price crooks and thieves. To the owner of this business shame on you for hustling and screwing your honest customers who bring you valuable books so you can get rich from. What you’re running is basically a trap house disguised as a family ran business....

Well, I walked in with my daughter to sell some books. I walked in with 2 boxes of books. Everyone was wearing a mask. I began to feel the onset of asthma come on. I walk to the sell counter and was told I needed to wear a mask. I told him I feel an asthma attack coming on and wasn't going to wear one. He tells me where to put the books down and I literally end up nearly dropping the box. I reach for my inhaler then am told to wait in the store (as long as I have a mask on) or wait outside. Well, I would think as long as I'm 6feet away everyone should be fine even while everyone is wearing a mask. Feeling like I was being treated as though I had a deadly disease I walked out and waited outside. I know so long as you have a medical condition you are excused from wearing a mask however not in this case. This pandemic has instilled such fear that even a person with asthma is considered contiguous. I wasn't viewed as a person but as a disease. I literally go everywhere without a mask bc of the asthma. I've already had 7 asthma attacks in 4 days and a total of 14 since the pandemic and it hadn't been a yr yet. The most I get are 2 to 3 asthma attacks a yr. 14 in less then a yr is way to many for me which is triggered by the mask. I'd like this store to know that seeing a person with a medical condition such as asthma isn't contiguous and ask that they see being 6 feet apart no different then wearing a mask and if everyone is wearing a mask why distance 6 feet apart? I would have argued with them but was unable to take my stand do to the asthma attack which sucked. I won't be returning to this...

I had a few textbooks that I needed to sell. This area is well labeled, so you see it as soon as you walk through the front door. I gave them my books that I wanted to sell and they told me that they would call me once they are complete. I took a walk around the store and browsed the different sections of the store. There is a broad selection of topics to browse. I found a section that caught my attention. I spent my time there until they were ready for me. They called me over the speaker when they finished. They purchased all of my books. I normally sell my books back to the campus bookstore, but they don't always buy them back. They referred me to 1/2 price books. I also use to sell my books online, but the entire process is lengthy when compared to taking them to 1/2 price books and getting money on the spot. I can make more online, but it really doesn't bother me. I just want the books out of the house as they serve as a reminder of the hard work that I just endured.
