The benefits of joining the Tinicum CSA are endless. For the sake of brevity I'll outline the top reasons why you should join the Tinicum CSA: Fresh food, visible farming, and the most approachable farmers anywhere.
Prior to joining the Tinicum CSA I thought I was getting the freshest produce from the local grocer. Every few months the market would advertise a "local" product, some farm in central PA. Yet I never saw nor enjoyed local food until joining. The produce is so incredibly tasty. It will lead to more creative meals. It will result in learning- and even liking- untried or unheard-of produce. (I had never had garlic scapes or celeriac before, and now I cannot wait for them to come online.)
It's fascinating to know the produce was harvested just that day from the fields behind the farm and farmhouse. As a matter of fact, some of the produce is selected by the participant. The tomato vines, the peppers, and the flowers are harvested by registrants. One can quite literally see where his/ her food comes from.
It's a wonderful trifecta when one considers just how wonderful it is to converse with the farmers who harvest the produce. They give a friendly hello, recommend how to store, and suggest recipes (along with the website) for the bounty being brought home that night. They will always say farewell when they are available.
These are wonderful guys doing a great job. They have welcomed my students for a field trip of planting spinach, an experience not forgotten by those who partook. It's wonderful to see where the great-tasting produce comes from and meeting the farmers weekly - or every other week - who work so hard to bring a great product. Depending upon the season's harvest, one could break even with the cost of produce or actually save money by going here. I can guarantee you will eat all of the produce. After all, you selected...
Read moreThis is a terrific CSA, the best and most generous I’ve encountered and I’ve been a CSA member in various states for many years.
John is a great farmer and handles adverse growing conditions aplomb. His team works hard and are very friendly and helpful. Every year their produce is of the highest quality. They offer weekly big or small shares and a bi-weekly big share which astutely covers the differing needs of the members. They also post delicious recipes based on what’s in the share. The CSA offers pick your own (raspberries, cherry tomatoes, okra, herbs, and flowers!) with every share type. All offerings are labeled with health info, uses, and storage instructions, terrific for beginner cooks! Spring greens, basil plugs, scallion, arugula, garlic scapes, radicchio, cilantro, parsley, different types of lettuces, beets, turnips, bok choy, (maybe one of these days we’ll convince him to grow Gai Lan and Choy Sum), broccoli, cabbage and Chinese cabbage, cucumbers, summer squash, cauliflower, tomatoes, green beans, peppers, garlic, onions, potatoes, carrots, watermelon, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, butternut and winter squash, and other cooler weather vegetables. Highest...
Read moreFarmers John and Stefan are the best farmers in Bucks County and produce the best fruits and veggies for my kitchen table. The produce is fresher and better tasting than what I find elsewhere, unwanted veggies can be traded with other members and there is the prettiest Saturday morning drive along the river (and a mid-week evening drive that is almost as beautiful). I love supporting people who care about their customers, their land, the produce they raise, and those in need (John and Stefan supporter local food banks and food rescue organizations). Happy...
