Hi - This is strictly a commentary on the feel and vibe of the place. I would have found this very helpful. We are new to the area and were searching for new places.
This is the type of church that is more reminiscent of a rock concert or night club. Very dark and loud. There could have been a smoke machine easily. Super loud (I put in ear plugs and still had to put my hands over my ears.) The serve communion in small black buckets (like desk trash cans) in serve yourself style with zero pastor leading or explanation. HOWEVER, we only went once, so maybe on other weeks they say more than pass the bucket if you want. It is super seeker friendly.
There was quite a few ages in attendance. Old people, middle age and young families.
My husband said I am snobbish ---- I prefer a contemporary church, that plays modern worship and some hymms at a level that does not need ear plus.
(And in my most self admittedly snobbish comment here - A pastor to look up to. His profile lists Dazed and Confused as his favorite movie. Maybe he is trying to sound approachable to the uber cool upper middle class who still smoke out in the hot tubs after the kids are in bed.) ----- The staff does clearly have a heart for Jesus - They are Jesus seeking leaders which I can tell from interviews and meeting others. I actually have no problems at all with them and Ventura is blessed to have this team move here and start a church for so many who clearly love this style.
So they have gone from a brand new church plant to a huge church in a handful of years. So obviously there are lots of people who are finding God here.
My 6 year old daughter really like it. Best of the churches that we have visited (3.) This was the only church we went to that both of my kids remembered what they talked about. Usually they come out talking about the candy they got at church. My kids didn't talk about the bible or God, but about using caution and wisdom. I will give them an A for clearly communicating. My older son has ADHD and didn't like the children's ministry. He prefers to stay in for worship and then be excused to kids church. You don't find that in modern churches as much anymore.
Just so you know my background. We went to a Vineyard church for almost 10 years and then a Nazarene for 51/2. We are still there but moved and trying to find...
