I'm a longtime customer of Sumo Sushi in Ventura & this is the first time I found the need to write a review on this place. First of all, I can genuinely say that I've enjoyed coming here throughout the years due to the once pleasant atmosphere & food, but there has been some changes in staff members, in particular a female waitress who wears glasses & has shoulder length dark hair which she sometimes wears it in a ponytail that has been absolutely RUDE & UNPLEASANT each time I get her as a waitress. I've never had a bad experience with a staff member there until I came across this waitress. It doesn't seem like she's like this with everyone because after observing her, I can see she's having decent conversations with other customers, so I guess she picks & chooses who she wants to serve with courtesy. I believe she's been there for about 3 years now. I'm a regular customer & I've been going there for so many years since my kids were young & now they're adults, so to have this type of unpleasant service, only deters me away from this place. It's unfortunate to have this experience with this particular individual as most staff members are very pleasant which is why I have returned time after time, but after having two unpleasant experiences with this waitress, I will think twice before going back there again. As far as the food & drinks, I truly enjoy mostly everything on the menu as they have a variety to choose from, but this last time I went there, the rolls did seem to be falling apart which made it difficult to enjoy on top of having the unpleasant service from this waitress. We literally had to request a different waitress as I was done being treated so poorly by this individual. I surely hope that management realizes that this individual waitress may be causing longtime customers to think twice about going there again. I will more than likely go back as I've been a longtime customer, but if I happen to get this particular waitress again, then I will definitely be requesting a different staff member to serve me because of the unpleasant experiences I've dealt with, with this particular individual. Read moreWow aside from their awesome HH menu, their lunch menu are excellent deals, so much food we had to get togo boxes. Salad dressing was sooo goood, our server Chris is top notch! We brought in a cake and they kept in the fridge while we ate and gave us serving plates too when we were ready for it! . . .
Update: we are sick as dogs and didn't want to dine in, found out that we can order from Happy Hour menu to go! . . . Restaurant is small and can't accommodate a lot of people so arrive early for happy hour. Ours was party of 10, got here at 7:30, waited for more than an hour so they could group a few tables together to accommodate our party, by then we were famished - docked 1 star for lack of initiative to seat our party - there was a tent for outdoor seating, but hostess said they don't have enough servers so instead they made us wait 1+ hour, with 4 kids under 6.
Once seated and orders place, they arrived pretty quickly. Edamame to the rescue - prevented a lot of hangers and meltdowns. My neighbor recommended the Mexican roll, my husband and I enjoyed it so much that we ordered another. Spicy tuna salad was a huge disappointment - salad was drenched with very salty dressing, I was just too famished to complain, definitely not worth the price even though the server says it was good. My husband loved the California roll and did not care too much about the Philadelphia roll. The sesame was sooo goood and the kids love it as much as the adults.

Read moreWe tried to go enjoy dinner tonight at the Ventura location. We arrived just before 5pm, gave our name, and asked for an inside seat. We were told 15 minutes. In the next 10 mins, there was a shift change.
Two parties were then sat when the hostess asked us if we've been helped. I mentioned we had our name on the list, but the hostess stated it was not on there. She looked at the list and our name was never written down or it was scribbled out. So I asked her to please speak with the lady who took our name, and she said she would.
Not more then 3 mins later, when the next table opened, a party that arrived AFTER us was called to be seated. I asked the hostess as to why when we were there first and her excuse was "I just got here." I mentioned that is why I asked her to speak with the lady who helped us when we arrived, but that didn't happen. (The lady that supposedly put our name down was still there working, but now waiting tables) Due to the blatant mistake that no one cared to fix, or look into we left.
We have been going to this restaurant for over 17 YEARS and have never been treated so poorly. We are super understanding people. Mistakes happen and there was a shift change so it confused things even more. But we legitimately had been waiting at least 10 mins more then the other party and voiced that.
