This place was a last minute decision to stop at and boy were we happy that we did!! The gal working was so nice and friendly. She started the video for us, engaged in conversation with my children. Spoke to them in detail about the black footed ferret (which we adopted one). She gave the kids a junior ranger booklet as well as a smoky the bear bag with items in it to remind them to be responsible with matches and take care of nature. My kids fell in love with black footed ferrets because of this stop. Restrooms were clean as well. The gift shop is small, but had all the right stuff. They even have a grasslands stamp we added to our passport books.

We did a SD overlanding trip in Sept. 2022 and stopped here for MVU maps to identify dispersed camping spots. There was a very nice ranger on duty when we stopped and was super helpful. I wish I remembered their name. They also had a dry box outside with materials in case they were closed. As frequent travelers and users of paper maps, we wish more states did this!

If you are planning on stopping at Wall Drug then you should also stop here especially if you have kids. They have a junior ranger program and it's super cute. The kids fill out a questionnaire about the grasslands (they find all the answers in the gallery area) and then they are given a badge and "sworn in" It's great and educational!

This was an unexpected find on a recent road trip, but worth the time. We were only able to stay about 30-40 minutes, but were glad we did. The video at the visitor center was a bit dated (the only reason for Four Stars), but otherwise very informative about National Grasslands. The displays were also helpful in understanding why these Grasslands are a vital part of the local ecosystem and economy. This is the only visitor center for the entire National Grasslands system, so it was a...

As others have stated this is a hidden gem. I have had extended visits to the Black Hills and missed it in the past. Visited with young kids this time and glad I found it. My daughter really liked earning Jr Ranger pins at other parks and we saw someone with one from here so looked it up. It is not a flashy or huge place, but has interesting exhibits and helpful staff. Much less stressful sensory experience...
