Recently, my mother (an immigrant Korean woman) flew into Chicago for her friend’s daughter’s wedding. She went to Union to catch a train to Carbondale for the wedding, and she was met with a racist clerk.
My mother missed her first train due to construction and when my mother asked for clarifying information from the clerk, she waved her off and yelled “next,” mid-sentence. That was that, despite my mother’s asking for more information regarding next trains, etc., and was forced to book a hotel.
The next day, she returned and that same clerk was there. This time, she misled my mother to the wrong train TWICE and it turned out she was working on the train that my mother was to board. It was almost as if she did it on purpose. To add: repeatedly, she questioned my mother’s English, despite my mother literally being a professor at a large state university and teaching in English. She also has a Ph. D. She feigned ignorance not knowing what my mother said, despite other employees and passengers understanding my mother’s questions CLEARLY.
Yet, her intelligence was questioned multiple times, she was waved off for apparently no reason and blatantly lied to multiple times by a clerk who was working at the desk and on the train.
In other, more minor occurrences, she was similarly waved off by other employees, but that desk clerk was the worst.
I urge Union Station to include diversity training. It’s 2022 in one of America’s biggest metropolitan cities. Be better. This was atrocious. Asian hate is still prevalent it seems, and Union Station is doing it no favors.
If I could leave 0 stars, I would. If I can find a photo identifying the clerk, I will....
Read moreArrived and team members redirected me so far around from the southwest chiefs lounge which is where I arrived and where I will be departing. Team members tried to force me to sit in the great Hall to aid in the risk of me missing my connection to LA. They removed signage that directs you around the station by adding new marquee s without proper directions and arrows. They closed the Amtrak service station nearest the southwest chiefs lounge and forced me to walk to the directed route to the great Hall where again the kiosk self service for amtrak was closed. Just so happen to find a customer service center hidden behind wooden construction panels that showed no signs of being upgraded in anyway, in fact they simply blocked to glasses and passage. Additionally the lounge for southwest chief has had it's outlets removed and redrywalled and the available outlets are covered with cover plates and locked in lock boxes that are bait traps near landfill waste cans that seem highly toxic. The entrance to the stairway access to the mezzaine nearest southwest was blocked and guarded by a redcap and his vehicle. In the mezzaine there is no signage or directory so you are forced to walk around and are bombarded with advertising. There were no food samples given out. There are checkpoint data collection methods in the form of different musical stations and low volume frequencies being played as well as dividers to disrupt the traveling experience, confuse, and allow this hidden in plain sight data collection center to function as a...
Read moreAmtrak Chicago Union Station offers great services ,restaurants & precise customer service. My issue with " Amtrak". I have been traveling the last 24 hours . I have encountered one after another late arrival to the stations that I've been connecting to. My most recent complaint is that I am currently traveling to Denver which I will arrive tomorrow morning at 7A 7:00 a.m.. I am currently sitting in coach seating. However, I asked they conductor if my spouse and I may purchase dinner in the reserve section. The conductor stated that would not be possible because we are riding in coach. Again, I offered to purchase the dinner I was not asking for a free dinner and he still said it was not possible even though they were not sold out in their spots. Why would a restaurant want to leave a open table without paying customers . And ,refuse selling a dinner to paying customers ? I think Amtrak needs to review their customer policies . Business is hard recovering from Covid . I will be thinking twice, before spending g my hard earned money . Please excuse me while I go buy a microwave hotdogs from the Cafe. My meal to tide me over,...
