THIS IS SOMETHING YOU PROBABLY HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE... When i crossed this bridge the first time, i noticed nothing unusual about it, in fact, it was adorned with KLM airlines flags across the entire space, had huge arches, and certainly did not appear MOBILE at all... but presto, after i crossed the bridge and went shopping, i came back to NO BRIDGE... i thought i'd lost my mind; i was certain i had crossed RIGHT THERE... but in fact, the bridge completely moves like a windshield wiper across a car window, and clicks in place when its ready to be crossed... LOUD bells ring consistently for at least a few minutes, as nearby humans wait with anticipation to jump on the rejoined bridge, and walk back across... quite a constructed marvel... NOTE: If the bridge is locked down on one side during transitions, or if its closed, they offer a FERRY as an alternative method to get across... its free... and runs 24hrs... videos here included... its a little bit more fun than walking across... If you come up to the bridge crossing, and see a bunch of people standing their waiting for the bridge, walk right past them and head straight down a little further to the ferry if you don't feel like waiting... SPECIAL NOTE: there's awesome photo ops of both the bridge and the town from the ferry... BONUS VIDEO FOOTAGE: a large freight vessel, full of cargo, was passing through just as we boarded and was filmed live...

They call this bridge the old swinging lady. It is a floating bridge with a bunch of boat hulls under it and a boat hull with an engine on the bow and stern so it can swing the bridge out of the way for ships to pass into the canal. A bell sounds and people hurry on or off the bridge so they don't get stranded on either side. There is also a ferry that runs when the bridge is swung open. That way if there is a slow moving ship entering the canal, then people can still get to either side. Instead of having to wait for the bridge to swing back closed and lock so people can cross. Also since it is a floating bridge they do not allow couples to hang locks on the bridge to lock their love away. They have a huge three heart shaped sculpture for couples to lock their locks onto.

I went out and had a lovely dinner but felt I wanted a nice beer to finish the night off. This brewery caught my eye and we decided to stop by. The atmosphere was wonderful. It had outdoor and indoor seating. Located near the Queen Emma Bridge the view is delightful. They didn't have all the beers but I tried the Tumba Triple and the Poco Poco. The Tumba Triple was my favorite. The Poco Poco was a little too chocolate flavored for me. They had a guitar there so I had to tune it and play a few riffs. I love the decorations and style of the place. This a great location for friends to gather. Jeremy The Natural Curacao Resort GS Pastry Visit us online, Instagram, Tik Tok

The Queen Emma Bridge in Curacao is a captivating and unique attraction. This floating pontoon bridge, often called the "Swinging Old Lady," connects the Punda and Otrobanda districts of Willemstad, the island's capital. What sets it apart is its ability to swing open sideways to allow ships to pass through the St. Anna Bay. When closed, it serves as a lively pedestrian bridge adorned with colorful lights that illuminate the night. Walking across it offers stunning views of the charming Dutch colonial architecture and bustling harbor. Queen Emma Bridge is not only a practical transportation link but also a symbol of Curacao's vibrant culture.

The 1888 pedestrian Queen Emma Bridge connects the Punda and Otrobanda areas of Willemstad. It's a pontoon (floating) bridge that uses propellers (powered by diesel engines) to swing open ~30 times a day. It became pedestrian in 1974. The bridge is sometimes referred to as the "Swinging Old Lady". It was designed by an American L.B. Smith. Our guide said it provides excuses for lateness ("The bridge opened and I had to wait"). When it's open a free ferry operates. According to Wikipedia, in the early 20th century it was a toll bridge but if you were barefoot you didn't have to pay the toll.
