4.5 stars...nearly perfect.
I stayed at Alvear Palace for four nights. The hotel is in the upscale Recoleta neighborhood, close to the cemetery and high end shops.
It has a grand old-world vibe to it...feels a bit like stepping back in time.
I had room 638 which did not face the street. The large room was in three sections, an office space, living room and bedroom. Even though there was just one window the overhead chandeliers were bright. The bed linens were embossed and newish...as were the towels. There weren't as many power outlets as is typical in a more modern hotel and some of the light fixtures were crooked or damaged. And the pillows were feathered but it would have been nice to have a menu to change if I wanted foam or hypoallergenic.
The bathroom was large with a standalone shower, tub, toilet and bidet. There is a grate under the sink where you can hear the water from the sink and shower drain into...startled me at first as I thought the room was flooding. It wasn't, but that is something we dont have in American bathrooms. The shower pressure was glorious but the shower head was unfocused so water went everywhere. I asked them to have maintenance take a look and when I got back to my room I had a new shower head that worked perfectly.
The breakfast buffet was not extensive but the food was hot and tasty. They had fresh toast, scrambled eggs, bacon/sausage, vegetables, cold cuts, fruit and an assortment of breads/pastries. Omlettes cost extra and were made to order.
The service at Alvear was impeccable...which I note as I am Black American and was traveling solo. Every single staff member went out of their way to greet me and assist. Front Desk staff were excellent and spoke fluent English. Every single ask I made was promptly and accurately handled. Asked for 7:30 luggage pickup...bellhop knocked on my door exactly at 7:30. Asked to break a $100 bill, I came downstairs to find they had precounted and set aside $100 in small bills. They arranged airport pickup and transport to a tango show. Even got my laundry done. Top notch service.
If you are looking for a hip hotel, Alvear Palace is not for you. But if you like grand historic lodging...book at Alvear. I would definitely...

Read moreOur stay at Alvear Palace for Christmas and my birthday this year was far from ideal. Upon arrival and check in, we had asked the front desk for the king bed to be separated into two. Apparently the front desk never relayed the message, as the beds were still put together and we had to awkwardly wait a long time for housekeeping to separate the beds.
The hot water faucet wouldn’t turn off as it had become difficult to turn the handle. Not being able to turn off the hot water in the shower is a hazard. We asked for someone to come fix it and maintenance came.
Later in our stay on 12/26 after working in the room all day, we called the front desk and asked for the room to be cleaned while we went to dinner. The front desk confirmed and when we came back around 10pm, the room still had not been cleaned.
On our last morning as I took a shower on the morning before leaving for the airport the hot water handle in the shower came off completely and scalding hot water sprayed like a fire hose toward me and the shower door. It was INCREDIBLY difficult to get out of the shower with scalding hot water spraying all over me. The bathroom also started flooding. When I tried calling the front desk they didn’t answer the phone for minutes. Finally someone answered and I told them it was an emergency as the bathroom was in danger of flooding. It took them a VERY long time to come to the room, with water leaking out the sides of the shower and onto the floor of the bathroom. My toiletries were completely soaked.
We emailed the “manager” Nadia Salvagno now FOUR times with no response. This is completely unacceptable for any business. DO NOT BOOK...
