Refugio Chalten Hostel — Hotel in El Chaltén

The price-performance ratio and the attitude of the staff is just not right here - please stay somewhere nicer. We had a non-refundable reservation for 3 days here, roughly 60€ per night for a double with shared bathroom. Upon arrival everything was dirty (the sheets full of stains and especially the fridge). When we complained about this, we were told that they were just a hostel and not a hotel and that this was the quality to be expected. As we didn't feel welcomed, we decided not to stay. That's why we should pay for 1.5 nights (cash only) - after they had the money, they wanted more money for the booking fees. I had already canceled via the website, so I asked in reverse to get the 15% back. No, of course not - interesting logic. Finally, we ended up staying in 2 other hostels in the north of El Chalten, also for 60€ the night but in a clean double with private bathroom and breakfast. I never encountered such a bad hostel during my 3-month travelling through...

This hostel's rooms might be modest, but the people I met there were truly wonderful. I arrived in El Chalten at 10 AM, well before check-in, and they kindly let me store my bags so I could squeeze in a quick hike to Chorrillo del Salto. The next day, I was completely unprepared for my planned trek. Gabriel, the caretaker, generously lent me his hiking pole, and my roommate gave me a fantastic debrief on the Laguna Hija & Madre trail. This invaluable advice allowed me to tackle both Laguna de los Tres (near Mt. Fitz Roy) and Laguna Torre (near Mt. Torre) in a single day!
