Lots of character during inexpensive stay
S42°53.103' E147°19.627' The Astor is located in Central Hobart and is ideally situated to see Hobart on foot. We only needed the car to visit Mount Wellington. The Astor has limited parking space for 5 cars in the back. Call Tildy, the owner, ahead. This rambling downtown 1920s charmer, according to Lonely Planet’s must visit recommendation, retains much of its character: stained glass windows, old furniture, lofty ceilings and the unstoppable Tildy at the helm. Some TA-reviewers noted to have difficulty controlling and restraining Tildy, but Tildy is charming and always willing to help. Just go with her flow and she makes your stay memorable.
The Astor Private hotel is clearly the opposite of a large business hotel and much closer to a B&B. Our large corner en-suite number 32 on the second floor (3F) in February 2020 was clean and had an excellent double bed, view of Macquire St, television, fridge, heating and fan. Wi-Fi reception was not reliable in our room. In 2017, our room had been renovated with a modern bathroom with heating lights. The room is cleaned daily with fresh towels. Some other rooms are not en-suite with bathrooms in the hallway. Instead of an air-conditioning unit, the room has a fan. We slept with open side window. There is some noise from the traffic on Macquarie St. but it did not bother us.
Each morning a simple breakfast buffet is offered with bread, cereals, jam, orange juice, milk, powder coffee and tea. Nothing cooked. Enough to start the day. To avoid high costs for internet travel agencies, we booked our room directly by e-mail. We paid €149 per night for a double room in February 2020. For accommodations in the centre of Hobart, this is a competitive price.
The Astor Private Hotel offers a good night’s sleep in a charming hotel full of character with a very personal host. Highly...
Read moreMe and my partner stayed 3nights and I may say this place is one of my horrible hotel I ever done... nothing better than backpack. Nosie: can hear stars from upstairs and our room was next toilet and.... no words to say. No way to cover noise from outside, garbage collect trucks processed at 6am....
Room: very low ceiling and too much unnecessary or big furnitures. Oh, smells from carpet... corridor near toilets is worse, I blocked my nose.. this does not mean they are dirty, it is just a bit too old for everything. There is sink inside, OMG... water is yellow... Thank God I found before brush my teeth.
Facilities: i was in 2000 as no Internet in the room, public area only. But it was mentioned.... no welcome water shower gel or shampoo.
I don't know if you call heritage when it's smelly and old furniture are around but no for me...
My partner and I were excited by the feedback online, but really.... I rather tell, choose cheap backpackers instead of budget hotel..(fyi, I even didn't know it was budget hotel tho..,. you will see once you get there in front of door we paid $450 for 3night). Otherwise spend a bit more to find franchise one.
You might think I am too much negative or it comes from my character, I have pictures of the room, plz let me know if u don't agree. Also check my feedback of other place if u think I am...
Read moreWe had the pleasure of staying at the Astor Hotel for two nights, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The hotel exudes a stunning heritage charm, reminiscent of The Chateau at Tongariro National Park, though on a more intimate scale. Its vintage features offer a refreshing contrast to the abundance of modern hotels today, making it feel like stepping into a beautifully preserved piece of history.
As you ascend the staircase to the reception, you're greeted with the warmest and most genuine welcome we've ever experienced. The staff were absolutely incredible—friendly, personable, and full of humor that kept us smiling throughout our stay. Their exceptional hospitality set the tone for the entire visit.
Our room was bright, airy, and perfectly showcased the hotel’s heritage character. Every detail was thoughtfully maintained, and the cleanliness was impeccable. We especially adored the intricate tile work in the bathroom and the rich red vintage carpet, which added to the timeless charm.
