Very impressive renovation to a grand old dame of Millers Point. There's enough of the old world charm left in the bones of this unique building to lend it a unique air, and the now-accessible upper balconies are superlative on a sunny Sydney afternoon. As you would expect from a gentrified pub in a formerly wharfie neighbourhood, the prices now match the sophistication of the drinks menu and there are some delicious finger foods to be ordered from your friendly bar staff. Bookings recommended, especially for more than a couple of people, but we wandered in one sunny winter Saturday at midday and had no trouble snaffling a light-bathed table. The only mild gripe I had (and this is probably because I've become a grumpy old fogey) is that at lunchtime, I found the volume of the music from the speakers in the bar just that little bit too loud to facilitate comfortable levels of conversation with my drinking companions - the volume was more akin to, say, after 8pm in a King Street Newtown venue. The staff kindly did look into adjusting the volume down for us, but advised that it is pre-set and covers the entire top level bar and the level below that, so could not be isolated just for the bar space we were in. This (especially the top level bar and balconies) is a fantastic venue for marking someone's birthday, graduation, recent marriage, anniversary, etc. BTW, for anyone wanting to soak up the charm of the 'old' Palisade, the street-level bar is preserved as it was, and offers more hearty, traditional pub food from the kitchen. The street-level outdoor area is also great - an improvement on the lonely single wooden train station bench that used to sit against the bricks of the pre-renovated 'old' Palisade. Well done to the architectural firm engaged to undertake the fit out of this...

Read moreView was brilliant!! Cocktails were ok. Food was ok. Service was rubbish.
Service needs some serious work. My friend and I got there at 1230. We were told there was a 90 minute wait to be seated indoors however we could sit outside. So we sat outside with the view to sit indoors once a table was available and informed our waitress of this as asked by the maître de.
2 hours later we were told by another waitress that there weren’t any indoor seating available at the time, and that she could place us on a waiting list. So basically we waited for two hours to be told we weren’t in the waiting list!!
We requested to be placed on the waiting list as we were still waiting for a friend to join us. The waitress spelt my name wrong (Anupam Sharma to Annika Charmer .... wayyyyy off). When I tried to correct her she said “oh it doesn’t matter. I just need your number”. Rude! Unbelievably rude!!
Later in the evening I asked for a dry martini. I understand that has olive brine in it but, my goodness, this was sooooooo salty it was like drinking nothing but brine.
In any case, Jen, our second waitress turned out to be quite caring. She was lovely. Thank goodness for her service otherwise I would have written a much...
