This hostel could be great, but it isn't. ||||The main problem is the staff. Firstly, it's like they have their own hang out place at the hostel and they all come to hang around all day and sleep in the empty beds and take showers (and there are only 2 showers for Female and 2 for Male). They sit around in the common area all day occupying all the seats and couches watching tv and doing nothing. They put music on really old broken speakers so you have to listen to that distorted sound. They are so busy doing nothing that they don't put toilet paper on the bathrooms or even bother to see if the toilets are clean. ||||But worst of all! They occupy the tiny little kitchen making lunch from early in the morning, occupied the 2 only stoves with chicken and rice. And the rest of the kitchen is full of dirty pans and dishes, so there is barely any space for you to do anything. We wanted to cook there to save some money but we gave up.||||Then, if you manage to cook anything, when you're gonna go eat, the tiny dinning area which has 2 tables, one with an oven on top of it and a pan with old frying oil. And only 3 chairs sometimes occupied with bags. This area is inadvertently the laundry space and storage room of the whole hostel. With clothes and towels hanging everywhere, cleaning products and all kinds of stuff. And I'm talking about a 3x3 meter space. What a beautiful breakfast! ||||Luckily there is a second possible dinning space which is outside in a nice little terrace, but as you're arriving with your arduously made breakfast you find the tables dirty with cigarette ashes from days before and many ashtrays filled with tons of cigarette butts, and nothing to clean it with. Once you manage to blow away the excess of ashes, you finally sit down avoiding to touch the dirty table, half way through your breakfast, one of staff or staff's friends comes to smoke a cigarette right beside you. So there goes your digestion. ||||It's a shame because its a beautiful building, and its very well located. But, too bad they don't bother to take great care of the...

Read moreTo be VERY clear, I did NOT stay here. This review is basically for:
#1 = On Hostelworld, when I booked, I booked: "Standard 8 Bed Mixed Dorm" (Note, I see they also have this option on Booking.com). BUT they do NOT in fact have this option!
They showed me in their system. They basically have 2 dorm rooms. One 8 bed female dorm and one 12 bed mixed dorm. They need to make this update on the website stat!
What happened was, I arrived at 12:20pm, their check in was at 1pm... and they couldn't do earlier. That's fine.
But then at 1pm, they told me this error. The manager (I guess, someone that the front desk person called) who eventually came said they could try to ask if one of the women in the 12 bed dorm would swap with me... but that's besides the point when I wanted at 8 bed dorm (and then I'd have to wait around until this random woman responded)
#2 = Customer service wise, the front desk person was just rude. When I arrived, I spoke in Spanish with the person, they didn't speak Spanish very well but most Portuguese speakers understand enough Spanish and I understand enough Portuguese that generally speaking in São Paulo I haven't had problems. But when I checked in with my American passport, she was like, oh... so you speak English... and seemed affronted that I'd tried to speak to her in Spanish... even though her English wasn't good either!
The service was also bad because there was just no urgency in the escalation of my situation... or any urgency. Even when I was waiting until 1pm to check in, someone else came in to gossip/chat with the front desk person, and she took her sweet time getting to me. Again, would have been fine if I hadn't waited 40...
