Lemuria Hostel — Hotel in Valparaíso

This hostel advertises itself as being in a great location with a great view. The reality in Valparaiso is you are better off down towards the town with good choice of restaurants and bars and easy access to transport. Up the hill they are all sporadic, very expensive and very average. The hostel misleads in its advertising. I booked a double room with en-suite. It turned out the room had no heating, no towels, no window and no en-suite. The bathroom was next door adjacent to a kitchen with only a frosted glass door to separate. There was no hot water in the sink - the hostel described this as not cold water but natural water. What a cheek. Breakfast was one roll per person and tea/coffee with powdered milk. This is the sort of place that just wants your money, misleads and tries to provide as little as possible. They tried to claim that it did not say in their description there was heating so they did not need to provide any. They also tried to claim they were only a hostel - for $44 US a night, it does not matter what they call themselves - its a rip-off. My friend and I arrived in Valparaiso so happy with our surroundings and were excited to stay in this hostel. We saw it from the outside and thought it looked inviting... boy were we wrong. The owners were so unprofessional and rude and the bedding looked like it had not been washed in about 5 years. We walked past the laundry and there were piles of sheets and dirty clothes. The kitchen was disgusting and there was NO breakfast included. The owners were very unhelpful and the hostel is very over priced. I would not stay here again even if someone paid me. The lockers were broken and there was only one tiny locker available. They also had a lot of promotion for smoking weed in the hostel and had a tip jar out the front that said “tips for weed” this could make the wrong person very uncomfortable. There was no PowerPoints and the overall vibe was very dark and dingy. My friend and I felt unsafe and uncomfortable the entire time. There was also only 1 toilet and 1 shower and we didn’t shower due to it being SO dirty. Also the toilet paper in the bin was overflowing and wasn’t emptied. So horrific! Do...

I quite liked this hostel. The staff were great, and the location was good too. Very close to some nice restaurants and with easy access to great views across the bay of Valparaiso. In addition the roof terrace is great and is a lovely spot to have a few beers on an evening.

What lets this place down is the cleanliness. I stay in a lot of hostels, and I don’t expect spotless rooms and bathrooms, but this was a bit much for me. Our rooms bedsheets smelled musty as if they hadn’t been dried properly, and there was no ventilation.

The kitchens too were pretty grimy, plates and pans had a good bit of grease on them.

The worst bit was the bathrooms though. Similar to the room we had, there’s just no ventilation and the ceilings of both bathrooms I used was just covered in black mould. The floors were wet and covered in hair, just not what you want.
