The main problem with Casa Kiwi is that if something goes wrong during your stay, the staff will do nothing to help rectify the situation. Instead, they will be uninterested about your problem and are generally unfriendly in any case.
For example - on the second day of my stay, I arrived back at my dorm to find some of my dorm mates smoking a joint, which was against hostel policy. As I'm not a smoker myself, I asked the reception if they could move me to a different room as the dorm smelled badly of smoke/cannabis. I was told this was not possible, as I had already booked (and payed) for the night but they would ask the smokers to stop. I decided not to make a fuss.
However, the next day, exactly the same thing happened again. This time, people continued to smoke in my dorm until 3am, despite me asking them to stop 3/4 times. The next morning, I told reception what had happened and the member of staff on duty said 'this is not our problem'. Even after I explained to them that it was their problem because drugs were being consumed in their hostel, they refused to let me move rooms or refund my nights stay in the smoke dorm. Although I was told the manager would email me, this never happened.
For me, this attitude sums up what is wrong with Casa Kiwi - the hostel has reached an unfounded level of popularity amongst travellers so that it no longer needs to concern itself with ensuring that each individual traveller has a pleasant stay. I would absolutely recommend...
Read moreHi, I stayed at Casa kiwi recently..the pictures made it look very inviting. When we arrived the staff was super accommodating and was able to switch rooms and give us the same price, as the one we had originally booked..so far so good. The atmosphere and people/ staff weren’t exactly friendly, not sure if it was just the timing of our stay, eg: lots of people on devices and people seemed to be sticking with their groups etc. we we’re definitely trying to socialize but it was pretty one sided on our end. The location is great but because we are in the “party” neighbourhood the noise was pretty loud at night. There is a a few clubs directly behind the hostel and you can feel the bass in the rooms.. one of he nights the music was blasting until 4am in the morning and this wasn’t even on a weekend..good ear plugs couldn’t even block it out. When I had mentioned it to the staff the next day, they were not sympathetic, saying “we should get used to it” also the extra night we stayed they charged us 30,000 extra each more per night, which they never informed us beforehand..bad communication all around.
Also it doesn’t seem like they’ve put any money into the place in years..could use some...
Read moreI had an good time here. The employees were polite, and the rooms were well cleaned. I appreciated amenities like the free wifi, and I had a good time watching the Copa America semi-final in the tv theater downstairs. I also liked having a mini-mart nearby for food purchases. There were lots of restaurants and cafes nearby as well, which I appreciated. ||One very minor criticism I have is that for the small footlockers underneath our beds, we had to purchase our own locks if we wanted to keep them locked. However, said locks were not particularly expensive at the supermarket about 20 minutes walk away. You just have to make sure that the lock you get fits the footlocker latch (it can't be one of those rectangular locks). The other minor criticism was that my dorm room could get a little warm during the day, but it really wasn't too bad. ||All in all, for the price, this hostel was a steal! I would definitely recommend it for solo travelers looking for an affordable, yet still safe place to stay...
