Juan the receptionist ( staff ) was very raciste , after noticing that i was the only one who was charged money of the room upfront ( common think in Colombia even though the 2 one i went never asked me upfront , i paid when i check out ) so i went down and tried to understand the situation, so i asked him about the 2 girl that check in the room ( german girl ) why he didn't ask them to pay upfront as i did hear him telling them that they can pay when they check out and before that i did her 2 other german guy as well speaking that they have to pay the guy as well the next day when they check out , so initially he answered me About the guy that they where already their before and so he know them , so i asked what about the 2 girl , then he did tell me : hooo i see what u think , i told him : ok tell me then , he say yeah i know u think because they are blond and german and u are .... ( didn't finish his phrase but of course we understand ) , i answered: well yes that what i think then prove me wrong, i mean i gives u the reason why i think you are racist , well tell me im wrong and explain to me , anyway so e keep arguing and he keep telling me that was in my head , blablabla , of course the discussion went up on tension then he start telling me : if u where french u wouldn't act like you do ! , i said: what do u mean ? ( by if u where french ) , he said : yes u giving me a french passport you are not even french , i know people like you Immigrant , u not even french ! Anyway he went bringing the owner of the hostel ( British guy ) and of course i was angry so after he and i explains to him the situation he nicely asked me to leave the hostel as anyway i wasn't feeling comfortable with the situation and anyway he was worried about his staff ( a decision i understand and give him all the right as he was worried about the safety of his staff but doesn't mean that i agreed with the decision) ! So basicly i dont know what gonna happen after that he mention that he was gonna investigate and if he find out that i was right he was gonna kick him out , and by the way it was an israélien guy their who witness the situation and he did hear what the guy say , i did ask the owner to ask him on the spot of what i was saying is true of if im laying, but refused as he didn't wanna involve the guy...
Read moreUpdate: DO NOT STAY HERE. I am absolutely appalled by the way the owner reacted to this review. I never would have thought the owner would yell at and harass me on the street for posting an honest review.
I posted this review yesterday morning, and when I returned to the area later in the day, the owner was out on the street, and he began harassing me. He told me I'm not welcome in or near his hostel. He asked if I was Austin Estrada, then told me that I posted a negative review of his hostel this morning. He got extremely angry and began yelling that if I "strongly recommend people don't stay there" I "shouldn't be anywhere near the hostel anyways" so I said okay and walked away to my new hostel. As I was walking away he was yelling my name, and yelling that I "shouldn't have put that review" and that I should "do some research before I post a negative review". I moved to a hostel in the same area as purple monkey. I will not name it for the time being because of the extremely aggressive P.M. owner.
This is the first negative review I've left of any hostel in Colombia, but I felt it was honest after the staff was so rude to me and after the hostel was so different from other reviews and their advertising.
Original review: I don't recommend this hostel at all. They make it look like they're a really social hostel, but they close the rooftop area (the only open space in the hostel) at 11:30. Then they kick you out on the street if you want to hang out more, or even smoke a cigarette. All the staff at the front desk was rude except for one younger guy, who was very nice and friendly. This hostel is nothing like what you're expecting. Just about every backpacker I've met here has wanted to shorten their stay because it's not what they advertise it as. If you want to be social and have a good time, or even have somewhere to socialize past 11:30, I strongly recommend you find a...
Read moreRegrettably, my stay at this hostel turned into a nightmare. On the first night, I requested laundry service, only to receive my clothes drenched and mixed with items that weren’t mine. However, the most distressing part was the menacing lockers with an impractical cover door that swung open at a perilous 90º angle. During my stay, the locker fell on my head, causing pain. The next morning, amidst my search for belongings, the door slammed shut, leaving a cut on my face. I received no aid, tending to the wound alone with whatever I found in their first aid kit.
When I voiced my discontent and sought compensation for the mark on my nose, the manager blamed me, dismissing any responsibility. Reluctantly, I accepted a meager $2 per night discount, fearing I wouldn’t receive anything more. I endured two days of headaches, saddened by the additional blemish on my face, aggravating my struggle with hormonal acne – a significant concern as a professional content creator.
Expressing my dissatisfaction yielded no response. Even the owner’s presence failed to elicit an apology. Instead, I was subjected to derogatory remarks indirectly aimed at my coastal origin during breakfast. They offered a mere $7 discount out of a $61 stay, leaving me with a visible facial mark of uncertain duration, compounding my distress.
As a committed full-time traveler, I meticulously choose accommodations aligning with my values. With over a thousand hostels in Medellin, I wouldn’t choose one with this attitude towards their mistakes and that won’t have your back if something...
