If you’re visiting Copenhagen on a budget but still want comfort, convenience, and a social vibe, Danhostel Copenhagen City is a solid choice. Located just a 10-minute walk from the Central Station and right across the river from Tivoli Gardens, the hostel couldn’t be more central. Whether you’re into sightseeing, shopping, or nightlife, you’re right in the heart of it all. Rooms: I stayed in a private room, but the hostel also has dorms (including female-only ones). The room was clean, basic but modern, and the best part—every room has its own bathroom. That’s not always guaranteed in hostels, so it was a nice bonus. Some rooms even offer an amazing view over the city or harbor if you’re lucky (or book in advance). Atmosphere: Despite being massive—it has over 1,000 beds!—the place doesn’t feel cold or impersonal. The common areas are stylish and comfortable, with a Scandinavian minimalist touch. There’s a bar downstairs that’s perfect for grabbing a drink and meeting other travelers, but it’s not a party hostel, so you can still get a good night’s sleep. Facilities: Wi-Fi is free and fast, there’s a guest kitchen if you want to cook, and bike rentals are available on-site, which is perfect for exploring Copenhagen like a local. The 24-hour reception was super helpful with tips and maps. Luggage storage was a lifesaver on my last day. Value for Money: For Copenhagen, which can be pricey, Danhostel offers great value. It’s not the cheapest option in the city, but the quality and location make it worth it—especially if you’re traveling in a group or with family. Final Verdict: A clean, well-run hostel with a great location, solid facilities, and a welcoming vibe. Whether you’re a solo backpacker, couple, or traveling with friends, Danhostel Copenhagen City hits the sweet spot between budget and comfort.

This is the worst hostel I've ever stayed at. I booked a bed in a dormitory, and the room was unbearably hot and damp, even though the weather was nice and cool outside. It was so hot that it was difficult to sleep; it felt like being in a sauna. The only ventilation is the tiny little 2-3cm gap around the window, which does absolutely nothing in a room with six people. No fans either, because I was told they "ran out." It would have been more comfortable to sleep outside. You need to have SOME sort of ventilation in the dorm rooms. The current situation is unacceptable. The bathroom was disgusting. It looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a week. There was dirt and hair all over the floor with a broken squeegee lying there. The sink, faucet, and shower controls were all covered in a think layer of dirt and grime. I wanted to shower, but I decided not to because it was too dirty. When I told the girl at reception how dirty it was, she just said "Sorry!" That shows how much you people care about cleanliness. Of course the trash bin was overflowing too. And on top of that, you want me to put the linens on my bed myself, and then take them off and bring them all the way downstairs in the morning too? So you want me to clean up, when you can't even keep your own place clean? I don't think so. Not to mention the early check-out time, the highly overcrowded elevators that take forever, all of the doors that SLAM loudly when they're closed, the terrible music that plays loudly all night long in the common area so you can't have any peace and quiet... Whoever runs this hostel should try staying a night in their own place. I don't even think they would. Unfortunately I still have another night reserved which I am unable to cancel, so I have to stay in this awful place again. Wish me luck.

Just another budget hostel with much better rooms. I stayed for a night and opted for a twin bedroom. The room had two individual beds and a bunk bed (can occupy four). However the room was allotted for us as a whole. So it was fine. Check in was ok, the security was much better than the other hotels as you can’t goto the floors without a key card. The rooms were fine as well - so was the bathroom. When you check in they will give you the bed sheet and towels, which you should return to the lobby while checking out. Good thing is that they had a locker, but it’s not individual one. This locker was a common room- whoever has the baggage area key can access that. The room lockers were not really working the way it was designed to work (we tried to put a lock, but it was still unlocking with the lock on 😀). The thing that let us down was the breakfast. It cost you around 13 Euros (based on the conversion rate offered by the hostel) but the spread was pathetic. It had virtually nothing other than boiled eggs and bun. We expected a bit more at that price. However you don’t have anything in the near vicinity, so had no choice. Also the nearest metro rail station is 20 mins away. You have bus stops - but buses don’t accept euro, but only DKk. So the option is to walk 20 mins and catch the metro. We did that to goto the airport. It was a major let down. There is a grocery store two blocks away towards tivoli- you can buy few snacks from there. Tivoli is quite near and it’s at a walkable distance. My friend who stayed at the dormitory was not happy - probably we Indians are not used to such multi gender dormitory. But if you are used to it as a backpacker - it would be a good budget choice.

Review of Danhostel Copenhagen City

Danhostel Copenhagen City has some undeniable strengths, but also a number of significant drawbacks—particularly when it comes to breakfast.

The Positives

One of the standout features of this hostel is the beautiful view of the canals, which can be enjoyed through the large windows in the rooms. The location is also excellent, making it easy to explore the city on foot. Additionally, the staff are very friendly and welcoming, which creates a pleasant atmosphere from the moment you arrive. The reception and bar area give off the impression of a higher-end establishment, thanks to their modern and aesthetically pleasing design.

The Negatives

Unfortunately, the quality of the rooms does not match the impression given by the common areas. The rooms themselves are quite unattractive—not in a minimalist way, but in a way that feels worn out and heavily used. Upon arrival, guests receive only one towel per person for the entire stay, with no additional towels for hands, face, or any other use, which can be quite inconvenient. Additionally, guests are expected to make their own beds upon arrival and strip them before checking out, carrying the used linens downstairs themselves.

The bathroom was another major disappointment. It was clearly not thoroughly cleaned in a long time, and the grout between the tiles was visibly dirty and unappealing.

The Breakfast – A Major Letdown

If you’re considering booking breakfast at this hostel—don’t. The food quality is exceptionally poor. Everything is served cold, and the selection is extremely limited, with the same uninspiring options every day. The cereal is tasteless, the hard-boiled eggs are cold and stale, and although the bread is decent, it seems to have been stored in a fridge, making it dry and unappetizing. Instead of butter, only margarine is available, which feels like an unnecessary downgrade.

The coffee is awful, and judging by the number of untouched cups I saw left behind each morning, I was far from the only guest who thought so. This hostel is massively contributing to food waste, as people simply do not eat what is provided. It’s honestly shocking that such a large establishment hasn’t invested in something as basic as a food warmer to offer at least a hot scrambled egg option.

Final Verdict

Copenhagen is a beautiful city, but I will definitely not be returning to this hostel. If you’re considering staying here, I strongly recommend paying a little extra for better accommodation or even choosing a hotel slightly farther from the center—at least until this place improves...

I stayed a total of four nights in this hostel, and it was by far one of the worst experiences I've ever had in any accommodation. The rooms were filthy. I saw the "housekeepers" in action: they would barely use the vacuum cleaner on the floor and leave. Empty soda cans and bottles were left in the room for days, and the trash bin was never emptied during my entire stay.

You have to make your own bed upon arrival and unmake it when you leave. The mattresses are hard as a rock, and the pillows are as thin as paper. The whole experience can be generously described as spartan. There are no smoke detectors in the rooms, and I often encountered other guests smoking or vaping in the rooms, with no consequences. I alerted the staff several times, but nothing was done.

Make sure to bring a lock. They offer lockers, but the locks might not work, and anything that is not secured will get stolen. I locked my things in one of the lockers, and even then, someone broke into it when I was not in the room and took one of my camera lenses.

They do have a kitchen, which is usually clean. However, do not use it between 2 and 3 pm, as the cleaning staff will kick you out even if you are in the middle of cooking. There is no sign indicating those are the cleaning hours.

The elevators are a complete nightmare. If there is a large group checking in (say more than eight people), you will have to wait over half an hour just to get to your room.

The hostel usually hosts large school trips and tours, so you will be woken up by screaming children running up and down the corridors or playing with the elevators.

Overall, it was the worst experience I've had. I was booked for another two nights but decided to leave early. Money be damned.

For solo travelers Urban Campers or Generators will offer a much better experience at the same...
