From the start, we had a great overall stay at the Boardinghouse Hotel, and would certainly recommend it as excellent value for money. While its main focus is on business customers where it seems to do very well, we think it is also an ideal stay for tourists. So, don't be put off by the quaint (perhaps for Antipodeans like us, and Americans) name - it is a very well appointed aparthotel, not a youth hostel!||For the whole of our 3 day stay the staff were excellent and very helpful, upgrading us from L1 to a spanking new studio on a higher level as our room was very hot, with no aircon. The free wifi played up a little, but again they were more than accommodating and we got by.||Mannheim might be an industrial / commercial centre with its across the river neighbour Ludwigshaven, but it is also very handy to the absolute tourist delights of Heidelberg and Spayer, accessible by regional train and tram, on excellent deal tages kartes.||The hotel provided excellent coffee and very nice rolls (or sandwiches, if you must) at reception each morning, 'gratuit', and that was a very popular thing with all the busy young business folk who zipped in and out. And, right next door was an excellent Rewe Supermarkt, where more leisurely visitors like us could stock up on beverages and food, to cook in our very well appointed kitchenette.||Top...
Read moreI really liked the hotel. From the beginning it is very practical because no matter what time you arrive you can check in because you do it yourself. In general it made me feel very safe the fact that you only enter the property if you have a key.
The room itself is big enough, everything was quite comfortable to use (bathroom, kitchen, etc). As I was in a hot season, August, the air conditioning in the living room area was very useful, although it did not cool the room well, it cooled the living room area very well so it was very useful to be able to use the sofa as a bed (I have no pictures but it was a sofa bed and quite comfortable).
As for the location, there are bus and train stops very close to the hotel, but also on foot you can get very quickly to a central park as well as to the very center of the city.
I also forgot to take a picture but the apartment had a balcony which was very nice and comfortable to use for breakfast.
A plus, is that the hotel also has in the basement area a room to wash and dry clothes, I do not remember exactly the price but I think washing and drying were a total of 4 euros.
Overall I was quite happy...
Read moreI have stayed at the Boardinghouse Mannheim on two previous occasions and liked the hotel very much. This last time in September was terrible, akin to staying in the sewers of Mannheim. The sewer smell came when you started using the shower and became strong to the point of nausea after two uses of the shower. We asked the maid and she said that all the rooms smelled (poor gir, probably fired by now). It was the weekend so good luck getting anyone for service - no one at the counter. We called the number listed on the phone and got a guy in Heidelberg. Very nice. Wanted to help us find another hotel and refund the night we stayed. UNTIL - the manager in Mannheim showed up. No refund. No help. Very sour and rude. We ended up leaving paying for the one night, vowing never to return. The source of the sewer smell comes from the outdated sewer system in Mannheim. Most other hotels have managed to address it. Not so here. No investment....
