Wow, we absolutely loved our stay at Castel Hortenberg in Bolzano - in fact I would say it was the best hotel we have ever stayed at in Italy. Tucked away on a small side street, a few minutes walk from the centre of the city, this is exactly the kind of hotel we like to stay in - boutique, small & luxurious. The hotel is a recently renovated castle with about 25 bedrooms & has been done to a very high standard, with decor and design at the forefront. We arrived slightly earlier than the official check-in time and were offered complimentary drinks whilst we waited for our room to be made ready. We chose tea and this was served with the most divine homemade biscuits. We had booked a Deluxe Room which was lovely. The criteria that we look for when choosing a hotel room is: a good sized bedroom with seating (comfortable chairs or sofa), high quality bedding, modern & fresh decor, windows which open, and a modern & spacious bathroom with good quality toiletries. It ticked all of these boxes and more. The bedding and mattress was incredibly comfortable and we both slept really well. There were also complimentary jars of nuts & biscuits in the room. The breakfast was excellent and I absolutely loved the fresh juice machine which we used every day at breakfast. The outdoor heated pool & spa area was divine too - which I used most days whilst my husband was out running. Due to the fact that most restaurants are closed on a Sunday evening in Bolzano, we decided to have dinner at the hotel on the Sunday evening (which we wouldn't normally do, as most hotel restaurant food is not nearly as good as the local restaurants) .......but we were really pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is situated in the basement of the hotel and had a really lovely warm atmosphere. The dinner was really top notch! All of the hotel staff were also really helpful & friendly. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Bolzano - as Bolzano's only 5 star hotel, this has got to be the best place to stay. Oh and we really loved Bolzano too - we stayed for 3 nights whilst on our way to Cortina d'Ampezzo for a winter hiking holiday! Thank...
Read moreWe have visited Castel Hörtenberg 2 times this summer. First briefly with our sons, and then with friends with their children.|This is quite lovely restored hotel in a sweet location in Bolzano. It is completely private setting and actually quite magical. |We could walk to the center of town in a 5 min leisurely stroll, or to the cable car.|The hotel is that perfectly executed blend of old exterior and totally modern interior. Personally our favorite blend of old and new. Kudos to the architect and interior designer as this is a restrained but very elevated interior. |It just feels good to enter the private drive, go through the gates, and then enter the hotel. No matter how you arrive- harried or relaxed, you will feel immediately “Ok, ive really picked right here- this is wonderful.”|The public spaces offer lots of seating- whether inside or outside, so we could meet our friends and relax.|Wonderful pool and pool setting. The grounds are lovely.|There is even a small gym- but for this gym rat it actually works.|Breakfasts are a treat- both what you can order or the wonderful buffet- sitting al fresco is just lovely or inside.|But of course with any hotel- it’s always always the staff that makes the difference. And here Castel Hortenberg excels. Of course this always comes from the top- the tone that management sets. Kudos to management then :-)|It is that special professionalism that sets the tone. The message is that you are the guest and we want you to have a wonderful stay. It is not stuffy at all. |This started for us (and continued,) with Emmanuel at the front desk.|The breakfast staff was wonderful- professional and accommodating.|I will mention that we had dinner once at the hotel- again a very lovely, elevated experience.|Cant say enough good things.|Richard...
Read moreFinally getting around to writing a review on Castel Hortenberg in Bolzano. We stayed from Sept.25-27, 2023. Let me say this first. We will be going back to Bolzano just to stay here again it was that beautiful. The owners have pictures of the castle before, during and after the renovations and it was a remarkable transformation. Let me start with the only bad thing because this was the only bad thing I could say. Please change the background music playing in the common areas lol.. I don't want to hear American jazz or Marvin Gaye. How about some Italian music! Other than that this place was remarkable. We were greeted by Sara at the front desk on our arrival and shown around the hotel then to our room. The rooms were spectacular. Large rooms and a large shower and bathroom with a toilet and sink in their own separate area. The outdoor pool was heated and clean. We enjoyed a couple of glasses of local wine in the back seating area beside the pool after dark and it was just peaceful. We also had dinner one night at their restaurant down above the wine cellar that used to be the cool room in the old castle. It was a unique dining experience with great food and great wine at a reasonable price in a remarkable setting. As far as location goes it was fantastic. It was a short walk to the downtown area and sits behind electronically controlled gates (not that there is anything scary about Bolzano at any time of the day). Castel Hortenberg was deserving of a 5 star rating and we can't wait to go back! Any pictures you see are authentic and still, I am not sure they do this place justice as it is even nicer...
