An overall good experience with both some positive and some negative aspects. ||NEGATIVE:|- On our arrival in the evening of 29.12.24, we were given a room with a very limited view from the window only towards a wall (see picture), when we had booked an inner courtyard view standard room. They gave us the worst room of the hotel, even though we stayed for whole 10 days. Very disappointing from the two receptionists, I don’t understand why they chose to give us such a terrible room, when we stayed for so long. We also weren’t informed on arrival that there is a rooftop pool with sun chairs and we discovered it ourselves only on our 8th day. We could have spent more time on the sundeck lying on chairs on earlier days, if we had been informed about this, as it was a pleasant 19 C and sunshine during our stay. The pool was quite cold in December-January, but I was still able to take a dip and would have loved to do that earlier as well, had I known about the opportunity. Quite unhappy with those two receptionists because of this. ||- I tried to book a spa for us in the afternoon and the spa lady with brown hair in the morning of 4.1.2025 was extremely reluctant to give us a spa time that suits us best. I spend a frustrating 15 minutes talking to her about us wanting to go to the spa at 13.00 or 14.00 as we had been there already at 14.00 the week before without any issue. She gave no explanation as to why it was so difficult for her to arrange, even though she said the spa isn’t fully booked that time and they are open from 10.00-20.00, so I don't understand this difficulty at all. I eventually managed to book a spa. I also suggest that her and the other spa lady with straight black hair work on a genuine smile instead of a forced " I can't stand you, but I've been told to force a smile"-grin. It is not very welcoming. At 5 stars service should be whatever you want, you get, delivered with enthusiasm and a genuine smile.||- Priscilla needs more training before she can work at the front desk alone. At check-out morning, she saw us arriving towards the desk with our suitcases and she immediately picked up a phone to call someone. She didn’t even look at me, didn’t say Buongiorno, didn’t even nod, just held the phone to her ear for a long time looking at the ground, while nobody picked up. Then, with still no Buongiorno or other greeting to us, she checked us out with a lukewarm attitude and tried to charge 402 euros for spa service (our room number), instead of the 200 we had to pay. ||POSITIVE|+ Luckily we were able to switch to another room with a better view the next day, after complaining about it. The young girl who showed us our new room in the morning of 30.12.24 was very courteous and attentive, and we liked her excellent attitude. The receptionist lady with the curly light brown hair was also very nice. Other receptionists were ok. ||+ All the breakfast waiters and waitresses were nice. The breakfast selection was very diverse and there were all kinds of warm dishes, vegetables, fruit and cakes. ||+ The room was clean, nicely decorated and the new room had a nice view to the inner courtyard ( see picture). ||+ Le Ciel rooftop restaurant offered excellent cuisine with beautiful views. Especially the older gentleman with grey hair at Le Ciel was extremely attentive and polite. Other employees at this hotel could learn a lot from him about delivering 5-star level service. The other waiters were also very polite and efficient when he was around. When he wasn’t, they were just hanging by the doors and gave slow service and brought us hard old bread. ||+ The spa ladies who were at work on the afternoon of 6.1.25 were all very wonderful and we had a very relaxing experience. We asked them to turn the steam levels in the steam room higher and they immediately did. The spa had a steam room, a wooden sauna and a nice heated pool and it was a relaxing experience. ||+ We were very pleased with the two porters who carried our bags on our arrival on the 29.12.24 and the next day, when we changed the room. Both were very polite and helpful. ||+ Whenever we needed our car, Matia brought it to us swiftly and he was always smiling and being extremely helpful and we really appreciated his enthusiastic attitude. ||+ The cleaning ladies on the 4th floor were all very kind and helpful and the cleanliness level of the room was very good. |||The overall experience we had here was very nice and pleasant and this hotel was a great choice for...
Read moreUpon arriving at Palazzo Tirso, a good few hours before the guaranteed check-in time, because my flight was early in the morning, I was informed that my room (a Prestige Suite) had been upgraded to the Presidential Suite. The room was also almost ready, barely at 11 am, and I was offered a welcome drink in the meantime, but I had to wait 15-20 minutes at most.|This stay in Cagliari was part of a trip that was part tourism and visiting a Sardinian friend and part work on my book: needless to say, the accommodation ended up being so wonderful, that I was happy to stay in every morning and a couple of evenings, too, merrily typing away on my laptop, either on the suite’s beautiful leather sofa or the bed, both with stunning views on the sea, port and Cagliari’s medieval heart, the Quartiere Castello, from a huge floor-to-ceiling window.|It was very tempting to sleep in every day, as the Hotel offers all-day room service for breakfast and options for lunch, dinner, desserts, and TV snacks (a few of which are available 24/7). Whenever I emerged from the comforts of my room, though, the rest of the Hotel proved to be just as great: the all-day dining restaurant on the rooftop, Cielo, is another excellent spot for panoramic views of the city, has a great lunch/dinner menu and lovely tapas, mezzes and aperitivo options. I recommend their signature cocktail, Mystic River, which was very good, and spending a couple of hours at the end of the afternoon lounging by the pool (with or without a cocktail). It’s a very peaceful oasis and the perfect place to relax and recharge after a day of walking around Cagliari, with all its uphill routes and the still very sultry heat of September. |The SPA on the -1 floor is an equally good choice for some me-time. Unlike the rooftop pool area, access to the SPA isn’t included in the room rate, but I found the price (50€) fair for what it had to offer. It’s a city spa, so not especially large in size, but the heated pool and whirlpools were delightful. The sauna and steam bath were also fantastic, spacious, clean and kept at the perfect temperature. The selection of dried fruit, nuts, and herbal tea or water was lovely—the Helichrysum-infused water, which I was told was an exclusive preparation for the Palazzo Tirso SPA, was especially good. I’d add that the extra charge and needing to book for a SPA pass (which also offers treatments and massages, and a gym; the latter free of charge) makes sure the space is never overcrowded: the evening I used it, from 6 to 8 pm, I had it all for myself.|However, this review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the wonderful, wonderful staff of Palazzo Tirso: everyone was nice, friendly, professional, happy to assist, and always doing so with a smile or a kind word. I felt they were very good at adapting their approach to each guest as well. I was travelling alone, so I was happy to exchange a few words at meal times, at the SPA (before and after my stay), and at the reception desk. But if you were in company or simply wanted to be left alone, they were very discreet and respectful, without ever coming off as stuffy. There is more than one staff member that I’d love to mention by name, but I always forget to check with them twice or ask them directly, so that I can actually remember them. I do remember Federico, from the Cielo restaurant staff; but I can also simply say that my experience with everyone was extremely positive. |I had selected two or three hotels before finally booking at Palazzo Tirso and, as I made my choice, I thought that maybe I would try one of the other places another time. I usually like to change things up when I travel. However, I ended up being so happy with my stay at Palazzo Tirso that I’ll probably measure my stays at other hotels against it for quite a while. And of course, whenever I’m in Cagliari, this is the place...
