July 2019, I had finally saved enough money to have my dream vacation in Italy for my anniversary and Birthday. Fast forward to March 2nd 2020, we board our plane and we're super excited to finally be on our way. We know there is a slight chance of some disruptions to our trip but Costco will not change our reservations because it was only a level 3. We arrive in Rome, get screened and off we go to start our next 14 days in Paradise aka Rome, Florence and Venice. Our 1st leg, Rome was amazing. Saw almost everything. Went to Naples and Pompeii (maybe 50 ppl at Pompeii) Next Florence, the museums closed the day we got there but our hotel was amazing NH Collection Firenze Porta Rossa We were still able to go to a few restaurants and Café. Then Italy imposed the closure, which we agreed with. Now is when things start getting difficult. We arrive to the train station for our ride to Venice. Train was canceled due to not enough passengers. Next train to arrive in the morning hours, cool. While waiting, text from Delta, our flight (in 4 days) has been canceled... Oh no!! OK, just make it to Venice and we'll figure it out. Get to our beautiful hotel, NH Collection Venezia Palazzo Barocci I cannot say enough about the amazing staff. We were the only ones there, we were upgraded to the best suite and had our very own staff lol. The restaurant was closed but we had our own chef 😊😊 Fast forward to the next day. I spend 6 hours on the phone with Costco, Delta and KLM trying to get a flight home. Airlines are folding, airports are empty and I'm a little bit scared but we're in Venice, so we'll make the best of. Our amazing staff bring us a beautiful breakfast with a bottle of Prosecco, anniversary chocolates and cookies. THEN, we get a call. Come down to the front desk. It's never good when you get called to the principals office. We meet with the staff and the manager... "the government made a new statement. As of midnight last night, we MUST close ALL the hotels" I immediately break down and start crying, What do you mean we have to leave? Where are we to go? The train station is closed, our flight is tomorrow night, they don't even know if the airport will stay open. The staff immediately jumped on their computers and started figuring things out. Worst-case scenario, you can stay at my house, said one of the girls. Just then AIR FRANCE updates... You're flight has been changed, you leave in 5 hours!!! The manager gets us a private boat and we're on our way to Marco Polo Airport. Our driver says in all his life, father's life or Grandfather's life, he has NEVER seen this. We give him a hefty tip and express our deepest gratitude for his time. Airport was definitely a Zombie land, maybe 40 people, total. We have a bit of difficulty with the airlines canceling our connections but we finally figure it out and we board the plane heading to Paris. We'll be traveling for more than 26 hours but I can't express how happy we were when the tires left the runway. We finally made it home (Portland Oregon) last night, our luggage hasn't arrived yet but we're ok with that right now. I know that we probably won't be able to make it to Italy again but I wanted to express our DEEPEST GRATITUDE to all the wonderful people who helped us and made our trip, the best it could in a very difficult situation. Thank you 😘😘😘...
Read moreVery, very good location. Water taxi stand is literally in front of the hotel door. One can take the water taxi from airport or train station from the same stop. Within walking distance (10-15mins max) to all key areas within venice.
Provided umbrellas for use - awesome because it was raining non stop and we were glad to have the umbrellas for use.
Room was not very good. As ac cannot be turned on, room was stuffy and had a very musky smell. Bed was hard and the sheets were rough. The tv was the ancient old tv and only had non english/mandarin channels. Lifts were really small and felt so old. Room space was very small too. I didn’t sleep well.
Staff was polite but not the warm and helpful service i would have liked as a tourist.
E.g. we arrived very late at 9pm and had no drinking water at all. When we asked where we can find a supermarket to buy water the staff only said oh no all closed already. But didn’t tell us we can actually buy water from them. Would have been nicer if they gave us this option too. :p
Also, when i first tapped the card at the door, and tried to turn the knob at the door, the door couldn’t be opened. So i went down to look for the staff and he merely said oh there is nothing wrong with the card, just try again. I asked if he could follow me to help but he kept saying no there is no need and no problem with the card. Upon a few probes he said, just push the door when u hear the buzzing sound. That’s how i learnt that the door was to be opened this way.
When we asked how to get to the train station, he immediately offered the option of them booking a water taxi for us at 65 euros. But did not tell us that there was an option of taking public water taxi easily from the door of the hotel at 9.5 euros per pax.
But they did recommend a fantastic restaurant - guna. Best meal i had in italy in...
