We stayed in the Richmond Hotel, suggested by my cousin who lives about a 10 minute walk from there. The area is very convenient, and it is located in an area where there are several department stores, restaurants, and convenient stores. The hotel is under a huge covered walkway, which is perfect if the weather isn't cooperating. Sakurajima was walking distance, if you don't mind walking (about 20 min or so). ||The rooms were immaculate, just as most Japanese hotels are. You don't have to worry about any toiletries, or even pajamas; they have it all there, free of charge. ||If you are used to Japanese hotels, you will not be surprised at the size of the room. My husband and I each had a medium sized suitcase and we had to place one directly in the entry way (which honestly does not bother me). ||The staff was helpful and very friendly. Read moreWe had little idea of what to expect and were agreeably surprised by the high standards of this well located hotel. The rooms were large by Japanese standards, spotlessly clean and well equipped. Staff went out of their way to point us in the direction of the main attractions and restaurants. There is a tram stop outside the hotel which we used at the end of our stay to get back to the station; our taciturn taxi driver had taken a very long way round to take us to the hotel on our first day!
