I did not have a chance to taste the best unagi don which hidden in the mountain even though that I had rushed to their door, so I try this restaurant as a substitution. By comparing to the inferior products in Hong Kong only, I rate five stars for this. You can easily distinguish that the unagi is roasted just upon your order, unagi texture is soft and sponge, full body with lot of sauce, both unagi and rice is hot with steam, the Miso soup is cooked with unagi liver which makes the shop rich and tasty.
為免誤會,講一下菜單: To prevent misunderstanding, menu is:
鰻重(unagi jyuu, unagi and rice served in a box and separated) 鰻丼(unagi don, unagi and rice mixed in a bowl) 蒲燒鰻(unagi only)
鰻魚份量依以下分 Size of unagi as follow: 松(matsu, pine) deluxe with nearly whole eel, eel liver sauce is spreaded onto the eel without charge. 竹(ta-ke, bamboo) superior with more than a half 梅(ume, plum) normal with nearly a half 小(small…) just a portion of unagi 松 27xx 竹 20xx 梅 14xx 小 9xx yen円 價格隨時變動,請自行調節。 Price is subjected to change, please self adjusted. 飯量基本上全部一樣,如要加飯請大盛。 All unagi rice sets have same amount of rice, please order big bowl for more rice. 大盛(o-mori, big...
Read moreSpecialization in Unagi.Traditional charcoal grilled unagi! It's great satisfaction for eel lovers!
I ordered the small size(梅) of うなぎ重. It came in a box with 2 layers, first layer was grilled eel and lower one was rice.
As soon as you opened the box, you could catch the nice aroma of charcoal grilled eel. It's was fatty but amazingly tasty. Grilling eel on charcoal definitely added a smokey flavour to it. It was so soft that it just melt in your mouth. The rice was perfectly cooked and I just couldn't stop eating with the sauce.
All choices came with a miso soup. The small one costs ¥1420 with 2 pieces of eel, middle one costs ¥2080 with 3 pieces and large one costs ¥2760 with 4 pieces. The portion was filling enough even for the small one but I would definitely go for a big one with 4 pieces next time! Why not? When you're there already to enjoy?
NOTE: They don't have English menu, but it's simple enough you can make an order without difficulty. To avoid misunderstanding, I suggest just to show them a picture of what you want.
TIPS: For those who want to just give it a try but worry you may not like it, you can order Unagi don(eel on rice bowl), they have a mini...
Read moreAmerican tourist here. My Airbnb host highly recommend this place as a "must-visit unagi eel restaurant," as Kagoshima is the eel production center of Japan. He recommended eating a fresh unagi, grilled by traditional binchotan charcoal.
I went near opening hours on a Monday, there was a line for this place. You had to write your name in a book, sit in chairs outside, and wait for the hostess to call you. Mine was the only name written in English characters. Very little English is spoken here if at all, and I was the only white person. Cash only, no English menu. Needless to say given the above, this place was the right place to go to and was great. Bring your Google translate and check the photos on maps.
I got the Unadon Matsu (eel over rice), came with broth (I believe it's liver?) and pickled radishes (I think). As a bonus surprise, there was even more eel underneath the rice.
They serve complimentary green tea throughout your meal.
Honestly this place was so good I'm thinking about...
