We had wonderful best Onsen experience staying at Kirishimaya! We stayed from Monday to Wednesday in the end of January. They have two different temperature onsens and one open air onsen. There are variety of board games and playing cards available. So we took a few to our room and played after taking nice bath. A few staffs can speak fluent English, and they have deep knowledge about Kusatsu, so my husband was asking some questions about sulfur and history of Kusatsu, and learned a lot from them. The hotel itself looks like a traditional Japanese house with museum, as the owner travelled and volunteered in Enrope in 1986. When we visited, we were able to have private bath! It was quiet, relaxed, and so peaceful. The staff is very nice and I really enjoyed small conversations and staff’s recommendations for restaurants and other Kusatsu related activities. We also skied on the second day and the ski garden is 15 min walking distance from Kirishimaya. Very close to the bus terminal and town center and all the shops and major baths like Otakinoyu and Nishinokawara Onsen. Breakfast was amazing as they served traditional Japanese small dishes. You can choose to eat on Tatami mat, or at the table. Free umbrella was available since it was rainy on the second day to walk around the town. You can take many different ways to get to the Ryokan, as it is near Shrine’s tiny streets. I highly recommend you to stay there if you are visiting Kusatsu!

We stayed at this 5th generation, family run ryokan for 2 nights in October and had a lovely time. We were warmly welcomed and given a tour of the ryokan, which included a manga room, a piano, and the baths. We had a room on the second floor, quiet and overlooking the greenery outside. We enjoyed a rest in our room before heading out to explore, in our yukata. When we returned in the evening, the room had been turned over with the futons and cozy bedding. The baths were the main attraction for us. We went to the baths several times during our stay and it was just as relaxing and soothing as I imagined. Various amenities were provided in the dressing room, including hair dryers, lotion, hair brushes and more. The location of the ryokan is good - a short walk from the Yubatake, allowing for a more peaceful atmosphere away from the travelers and busses. There is a steep hill to get to the ryokan, so do be aware. If you're looking for a 5-star western hotel with all the western amenities, this may not be the place for you. But if you're looking for a traditional, interesting and cozy ryokan, run by the 4th and 5th generation proprietors, check this place out. Thank you for your hospitality and thank you for allowing me to practice my beginner Japanese with you and dad! I very much enjoyed our conversation. I hope to be back in the future with better Japanese to chat with you both. ありがとうございます!

Loved this Ryokan. The manager was very helpful and nice. When you get there, you will first take off your shoes and place them in a designated area and wear slippers that they provide you in the ryokan. The manager speaks excellent English and will show you around the ryokan and explain to you the rules for taking baths at the onsen. There is a shared bath area, but you can also reserve a private bath. The onsen water at Kusatsu has a lower pH (acidic) so you won’t need any body soap to wash your body, and it will gently exfoliate your skin. The room is a traditional style Japanese room with tatami mats and futons. The staff will help bring your luggages up to your rooms while you check in. The ryokan is located on a slightly steep hill, so packing light is recommended. The ryokan also has services to bring your luggages to the bus station once you check out. There are a few convenient stores nearby such as Lawson and 7 eleven. Definitely consider staying here if you would like to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan, great hospitality, and nice onsen experience. Our route to kusatsu: we took a Shinkansen from Tokyo station to karuizawa, and then a bus from karuizawa to kusatsu onsen. Exact change is required for the bus fare of 2240 yen, which you will pay when you reach kusatsu.

We stayed during low season, in Summer end of Jun22 for two nites, so it was not busy. This is our 1st time trip to Kusatsu.||Loc is within distance of Yubatake, 6min walk, next to Shirane shrine. A bit steep but still manageable. Easy in and out to get your meals/snacks around Yubatake area.||I love the front garden, it is lush and beautiful. I can imagine how pretty it is during Autumn or Spring with all the Japanese maples and sakura trees. ||Hotel guy is super friendly, accommodative and fluent in English. ||Our room is on 3rd floor, with stairs, so if you have problem , you might request to be on lower level. It is spacious and clean. I love the futon and especially the duvet, is fluffy and comfy. Pillow is the traditional Japanese rice pillow but personally I love it as it doesnt give you any neck pain and keeps you straight. There is a tv and fridge as well. Welcome cookies, hot water, greentea sachets and drinking water also provided. Towels and toothbrush. Yes, the toilet is tiny, but it is still ok. I love the view from my big window with all the greeneries.||They provide yukata and a cute shopping basket for you to stroll around.||They have one private onsen that you can use for yourself, and two communal onsen (men and women) . We tried the private one, it is quite roomy. It is just so hot, probably because we are not used to have an onsen. One thing to improve probably to clean the washroom drain inside the onsen.||Next day we've got a chance to use the communal one privately. And yes, you can enjoy it by yourself, all you have to do is ask. It is roomier and also have an extra outdoor , ofuro-size with forest-view. The temperature is warmer and nicer.||We ordered an extra breakfast for Y770 pp and it is a decent Japanese meal set. No meat, but nice and worth the price.||We enjoyed our stay in Kirishimaya ryokan, although we plan to try other places in Gunma next time, we think Kirishimaya is an absolute gem and worth to...
