We had an experience of two halves at Green Rich Hotel Kyoto. ||Our first encounter - friendly staff who was helpful and gave us great directions. ||The lobby lure you into a false sense of luxury and comfort - the lobby is spacious, modern, cool and airy.||The room on our first night was the absolute opposite, small, cramp, smelly, musty, dusty, rubbish under the bed, very small hard bed with equally hard pillows. This room is only fit for a single traveler! The air conditioning unit didn’t work properly. The bed is pushed against the wall so the second person is blocked in. The bathroom looks like something out of a caravan. It was so hot I had to shower and use the toilet |with the door open otherwise I would have passed out. We did not sleep at all the first night. This room was smaller than the room we had in Tokyo! No space for your luggage. The chair in the room was so big we had to push it against the door so that we could actually access the bed. ||The following morning after a terrible night of hardly any sleep, we went very early to reception to tell them about our incredible uncomfortable night. ||Our room was booked via a tour operator and we were meant to stay for four nights. We informed them we will only stay for three nights and requested if they can give us a room with at least two single beds instead. This didn’t go very well, we ended up having to pay more. ||Yes I am full aware that we had a nonrefundable room but they were not willing to even consider, she could see that my eyes were puffy, I was as white as a sheet and clearly had no rest, we did get a bit of a discount according to the receptionist but I was still not very happy to pay more for the duration of our stay to get two beds instead. I think they could have us e their discretion between in this case. She could see I was not trying to pull a fast one. I think this was a judgment error.||We were moved to a larger room with two double beds. The mattress we hard again and the pillows equally hard, there are spare softer pillows in the corridor for you to use, which I appreciated. The bathroom was much nicer than the other and we did end up with a more comfortable stay for the remainder of our stay. ||BUT again the room was not clean, again dust and empty drinks bottles and food wrappers under the beds, clearly not been moved for a long time, the walls had splashes against it which in my opinion could easily be washed off with soap and water, it gave the room a overall dirty feel. The carpet was not hoovered as there were crumbs of some description on the carpet next to the bed. ||Location of the hotel - even though the hotel is only a 10 minute walk from Kyoto train station it’s quite far from everything else. ||There is a bus terminal just outside the hotel and conveniently the 205 will take you all the way to the Golden Pavilion. If you buy a ¥600 day is ticket you can comfortably travel around the city but it all takes time and when your traveling and want to fit as many sights in one day then a hotel closer to the centre, north side of Kyoto train station rather than Southern side as with the Green Rich, will be more convenient. ||The extra travel cost makes the location of this hotel poor value for money. The JR pass is not excepted on the...
Read moreFirst up: it can get really scary walking thru long, dark, quiet lanes from the Kyoto station to the hotel late at night. Regardless of how safe Japan is, this was one of the few times I got spooked. So please just take a cab from the station and dun try walking if you are arriving close to midnight like I did. In the morning though, and after checking out the area + google maps, I realised the hotel location is rather good if you are taking buses instead of trains. The bus stop to many tourist locations are just a short walk away from the hotel entrance. And in Kyoto, I realised buses are the way to go! So this is the best point about the hotel, in addition to the small public bath. Room is small, old, and because they ran out of non-smoking rooms, the room was really smelly because the cigarette smoke/smell has gone right up into the aircon vents. No matter how much deodorant spray you use, it is futile. So please note if you are a non-smoker. Staff are alright but they hardly can speak English. Also a little inflexible in accommodating requests, such as refusing to help me to heat up some packed food. Breakfast spread is average, same...
Read moreI have stayed here with friends and also with my husband. It’s a 500m stroll from the Hachijo exit ( Shinkansen side) of Kyoto Station. It’s a fairly basic hotel but it has everything you need as a traveller.||Washing facilities are on the ground floor, there’s a small onsen for both men and women and you can get a massage in house at their small spa space. ||Two doors along is a bicycle hire shop which was fantastic for riding all over town. The city is easy to cycle around and so much quicker than public transport.||The hotel has basic amenities and they provide nice coffee sachets for the morning brew.||Aeon Mall is a short walk back near the station and it has plenty of restaurants and a good supermarket. The restaurants near the Kintetsu part of the station are also fabulous and you could visit a new one every meal. Unless you want a big hotel experience, this will be my go to place. There is a breakfast area on site but I’ve never tried it. There are so many options around the station. Finally the bus interchange is right outside the door so you can just go right from the front door to many of the sites including Gion corner and...
