Tokyo's Mitsui Gardens hotel Kyobashi has really improved it's sustainable features in balance with good hospitality over the last 3 years since I've first stayed here. Great location near Tokyo station & lots of shops and eateries (including vegan), but still very quiet in rooms. Really comfortable beds and high-quality of room.
Sustainable: reusables or recyclables almost entirely instead of single-user plastics which is typical at Japan hotels. They also have vegan options at breakfast and feature high-quality locally grown & produced foods. Aluminum cans of water in the fridge which has a high rate of recyclability instead of PET plastic bottles which are rarely recycled, often incinerated or end up in oceans. Good use of TV for updated hotel information that can be bilingual.
They offer single-user amenities in the lobby if anyone needs or wants a toothbrush 🪥.. which certainly saves on waste (and costs) and cleaning staff have less work in each room to do in addition to cleaning.
Could be better: leave the fridge off until/if needed by guests. Also add a recycle bin & compost bin as well as burnable trash. And change nightwear to yukata style for culture, comfort & inclusion of more body type travelers.
Use of local area artwork in room is great 👍 but should also promote the local artist in the room (how about a short promotion on the TV?) & also show/sell local crafts and artwork in lobby for local business and culture support that is of high-value to the visitors & offers unique stand-out appeal.
In my review from 3 years ago they ranked low as they used so much single-user plastics so it's great to see improvement!!
The good: LED bulbs in use, & smart-room system: card turns off most energy use when leave (taken out) BUT not A/C heater or air-filter. Good: bath water fill line, reusable/refillable shampoo, conditioner & soaps. Also policy to use toilet roll till finished reduces waste (sign educates customer), but no indication if tissue & toilet paper from recycled paper pulp (which would be better).
One nice touch is supporting local community is promoting shop where local crafts used in room (wooden trays, tissue box) come from.
Also, very comfortable bed, quiet room, no smoking smells & would stay here again in future.
Staff were also helpful & friendly, daily English newspapers available to read in lobby & tables available in room & lobby...
Read moreLocation is the top point for this property. Half a block away from the underground mall /Tokyo Station exit (8-10 minutes total to JR/Shinkhansen gates) and 1.5 blocks from Ginza subway line entrance. I walked from here to multiple Ginza, Nihonbashi sites and bus lines. Room had a good size window with plenty of light. Ok size for 1 person with 2 huge suitcases. Free water, fridge. Pleasant lobby area on 2. Laundry on 3- easy to use and clean. The two areas that were not good: Modular pre-fab bathroom had occasional sewer gas leakages. It wasn't horrible but it shouldn't have happened at all. I would have requested another room but I had too much luggage unpacked to move. My experience with the front desk assistance was mixed. Overall most staff I encountered were unfailingly polite and overeager to assist- with one notable exception. The associate I asked about luggage transport tried to give me the brush off and then gave me the wrong answer about the service which caused me to miss the deadline for shipment to airport. In the end I had to book private transfer to the aiport at a cost of $100 more than I expected to spend. During my remaining time at the hotel this person just stood around and glared at me when I was near the front desk. It would have meant a lot (and would have been a different google review) to have her apologize for her poor response and the undue time and expense it cost me. Again, this shouldn't have happened. I understand that there hasn't been a lot of travel to Narita the past three years but any Tokyo hotel should know how to get a customer's luggage sent to the airport- Japan is famous for this service! I walked to the Courtyard Marriott down the street and got a straight, accurate answer from them with...
