I was between giving this place two or three stars, but I decided with three because I really love the brand, otherwise I probably would give one star.
Check in was a bit uncomfortable because none of the staff are wearing masks yet the majority of guests still are. I know the staff was trying to be friendly towards my toddler but I do not want some unmasked stranger trying to speak so closely in my child’s face. I understand that the government has relaxed regulations but the hotel should use some common sense and follow what the majority of guests are doing and adjust accordingly.
Positive points: We stayed in the premium king room. The view was nice and the size of the room was comfortable. We ordered room service and all the food was excellent, especially the Japanese style breakfast. The hotel itself looks impeccable and the outdoor terrace is beautiful.
However there are soooooo many points this hotel needs to improve.
Negative points:
The welcome gift was not as good as other hotels. Just three small cookies and some golden berries.. They couldn’t be bothered to give even just one chocolate?
The hotel is not child friendly. We have a toddler and they put an extra bed in the room but it was so high and not safe for a small child. Somewhere like the Four Seasons provides an age appropriate bed. They didn’t even have a child’s toothbrush, which is pretty standard in all hotels. They provided pajamas for three adults… how is a small child supposed to wear that? Luckily I brought some pajamas from home.
There were no facial care products, not even facial cleanser! This again is pretty standard in all hotels.
The service was very inconsistent. There was even a strange incident where in the evening, two disheveled looking maids turned up with some tea in a canister. It felt very uncomfortable and we were wondering “Do these people even work here?” They said it was some kind of “service” they offer, but I do not want to be disturbed unexpectedly at night. Also, the presentation was so unprofessional. How could Bvlgari think that is any kind of “service”?
No information about the services (in room dining, spa, etc) were available on the television. I even tried the website, no information. Again, a very standard thing that all hotels have. On top of that, they didn’t even provide a paper version of services in the room . We had to call and ask them to bring the in room service menu.
I emailed the hotel to ask about in room afternoon tea. I received an automatic response generated reply that they would be in touch shortly. My stay is already over and they NEVER emailed me back.
I also tried calling the hotel. No one answered the phone. They don’t even have a system set up where you can leave a message and they call back. How are we supposed to get in touch? Messenger pigeon? Smoke signals? Fax machine? (The last one wouldn't be surprising, given that this is Japan..)
We called the front desk around 11:30 to bring our luggage down to the car. At noon they still had not come so we gave up and went to check out.
This hotel needs to improve the quality of service drastically. I don’t see how it can survive when there are so many other luxury hotels in the same area. Part of the luxury experience is meeting all the basic expectations (which this hotel didn’t) and then anticipating what the guest might want (which as you can guess, this hotel definitely didn’t even come close to).
I sadly cannot recommend staying here. You'd have a much better experience somewhere like the Mandarin Oriental (especially if you factor in the price). I hope Bvlgari will work out all of these kinks, because there is so much...
Read moreThis is a first class hotel in every respect. The interior aesthetic is luxury personified and the staff goes above and beyond in everything they do to provide you with anything you want, sometimes before you even ask. The location is hard to beat as it is across the street from Tokyo Station, occupying the 40-45 floors of the Tokyo Midtown Yaesu Building, giving you what must be some of the best views in the entire city. The hotel is relatively new so all of the technology in the room is state of the art. Single button controls for nearly everything, including for turning on and off the shower (which I already miss)! Upon check-in (which occurs in your room), they will connect with you via What's App which becomes a supremely convenient way to request anything your heart desires. The hotel staff are super responsive getting back to us within minutes each time we texted and they also actively monitor your itinerary (such as restaurants they helped you to book) to help ensure you get to where you need to go (by arranging taxis and the like). The concierge team (which includes the worldly Julian Cole) recommended an excellent array of restaurants, including several sought after tables, and worked hard to ensure our teens also experienced more than the usual litany of tourist sites to make it fun for them. Every day, the staff put fresh fruit in our room during the afternoon along with some freshly made sweet concoction (including an almond creme tarte one day that was absolutely the best we had ever had) and in the evenings, they had a different kind of decaffeinated tea in a thermos waiting in the room as well to have as a nightcap should you wish. The gym is spacious and well maintained, with great big windows that look out onto a terrace letting in a lot of natural light. The Bulgari Bar on the 45th floor is an exquisite space in which to have a drink or even coffee. The menu of cocktails is quite extensive and there is both indoor and outdoor seating, depending on the weather and your preferences. If there was one area they still have room for improvement on, I would say the main in-house restaurant Niko Romito (at which we had breakfast every day and dinner once) is not quite at the same level as the rest of the experience. This is not to say that it is not good but at times the service was a bit disjointed (meals not coming out at the same times, for instance) and the food was very good yet not exceptional. This is not reason enough not to stay here but is simply not an area of the hotel's greatest strength - at least not yet. Given how determined the hotel is to deliver excellence in every other area, I suspect they will get there eventually here as well. All in all, if you are looking to be pampered in every way during a stay in Tokyo, then a stay at the Bulgari Tokyo is...
