My 90yo mum and I stayed at the Mutiara Gurney from 3 to 11 Oct 2025. Mutiara Gurney is a 4 storey condo-like “hotel”. It’s either a new building or a newly renovated one, because work was still being done during our stay. There are 8 or 9 rooms of different configurations on our 4th floor. There’s one lift. There’s parking spaces within the small compound. The room has an AC and a ceiling fan. The interim wifi was very slow and not usable, a proper wifi was going to be installed soon. The TV was internet based and didn’t have any free to air channels. Entries to building and room were based on 4 or 6 digit codes. The hotel is quite well located, right behind the Paragon Gurney shopping mall, which also turned out to be a bad thing because we could hear karaoke singing from “I am Singer Paragon Gurney” up till 1130pm. The doors are quite “light” in that you can hear guests and staff talking in the corridor quite clearly, you will also hear a lot of door slamming. It’s a simple, no-frill accommodation. Ours was a twin single-bed room. The bathroom was simple, it has a tiny basin which, given the size of the bathroom could have definitely accommodated a normal size basin. It doesn’t have a shower screen so when you take a shower, the toilet and the entire floor is wet, which I didn’t like. There also wasn’t enough hooks to hang your clothes and towels where it won’t get wet by the shower. It comes with a hair dyer but you can’t use it the bathroom in front of the mirror because there’s no power outlet in the bathroom. There are also a lot of tiny ants scouting for food so be careful if you bring food into the room. It has a cold/hot water dispenser and a small fridge in the common area. Things started out OK, but on the 2nd or 3rd night, the toilet was not flushing properly. We contacted Ms. Sim, she apologized and moved us to another room on the same floor. After a morning shower I could see that the bathroom floor waste was draining very slowly. After another shower at night, the bathroom floor was flooded. We called Ms. Sim again, she sent up a staff who opened up the floor waste cover to clean off a tissue-paper like layer of fibre. We were offered a RM100 compensation for our trouble. In the morning of our check-out day, we went out for breakfast and came back around 11:15am. The lift was still working then. 30 minutes later, when we took our 2 large and 2 small luggages out, we were shocked to be told by a staff that the lift was not working. Luckily there was a staff on the 4th floor who helped me carry a big luggage while I carried the other big luggage, another staff was called to help carry the other 2 small luggages. It took my 90yo nearly 5min to walk down the 4 floors, one step at a time. Before I left for the airport, I called Ms. Sim and she told me the lift was not broken but was being serviced. This was just unbelievable, shutting down the only lift for service at 12 noon, when there’s a 90yo lady staying on the 4th floor, when she knew we were leaving for the airport around that time. She replied with an apology and that she was inexperienced. This experience has really scared my mum off from staying in a place like this again. Imagine if my 90yo mum wasn’t able to walk down 4 floors, how were we going to carry her down 4 floors of stairs safely? When we started carrying the luggages down, 2 ladies walked up to the 4th floor, what if a guest wasn’t able to walk up 4 floors? The worst thing was, we were not even informed of the planned outage, just like we weren’t informed when the wifi was changed, just like when we came home one night and suddenly there was a pin activated lock on the front entrance, I had to call her, she apologized for forgetting to send me the code. I cannot recommend this “hotel” because it is run by someone who is incapable of putting herself in the shoes of the customers, and who doesn’t understand the basics of...
Read moreIt's a shared house. With around 40 rooms. It has 5 floors, lift on the front, stairs on the back.
Each floor has 2 bathroom, water Dispenser, ironing board and iron, hair dryer, refrigerator. All are for shared.
In the ground floor, they provide several dining table, kitchen, washing machine, and hanger to dry clothes under the sun.
Car park around the house, and inside the house. Car park is free. No-hassle.
They have digital door lock at the main gate and house door. For each room, they provide you with key which will be given on the lock box outside each room. Key number will be provided once you booked.
In this case, I booked the place with Agoda. And got nice price. (Cheaper than if I booked directly to them)
The room is small. Hehehe, don't expect it will be like a hotel room. Its more like a guest house. Or "kos-kos an".
Inside the room, they provide AC + fan, table, chair, mirror, hanger / storage rack with hanger, and bed.
I have to say the bed is not enjoy able. I wake up feeling bad on my back.
Overall, the stay is OK. Resident or other guest also OK, some not nice but the other is very welcome.
For budget place to stay,...
Read moreBefore booking through Airbnb, I had to check the feedback here. Because previous comment is absolutely right about the wifi, situation didn't changed since then. The day when I arrived (it was a working day) the wifi connection was absent till the next morning. I'm really glad that there was a mall nearby, and Pacific Coffee cafe saved my day with good wifi and delicious muffin. Another thing was inexplicable noise in the middle of the night. So I couldn't slept two nights in the row. Communication with host is another bitter pill, it's almost absent, like talking to the bot. Bright side, comfortable mattress and pillow. The room was somewhat clean. And available drinking water machine.
Do not recommend, I believe that for this money, you may of find a...
