Having led a peripatetic existing over the past 4 months-sailing from Australia to New Zealand, sailing for the past 2 months along the East Coast of the North Island, I decided to travel solo to the South Island to explore the mountains and other places. ||I opted for a backpackers hostel in Wānaka after a hectic stay in Queenstown. I was pleasantly surprised by the Mountain View Backpackers hostel. Whilst it’s smaller than most hostels, MV had a chill and relaxed vibe. The crowd was the usual mix of international folk on their gap year, either working or traveling. ||A special call out to Franklin, the clerk at the reception. Franklin was a clear example of ‘wise head on young shoulders’. He was professional and mingled easily with the guests. I suppose what impressed me most is that he mucked in with the cleaning staff. When not checking in guests he could be seen outside cleaning the windows or tidying up the kitchen. ||Any recommendations? Perhaps an extra pillow. Otherwise a comfortable...
Read moreWe stayed at this hostel for three nights. Two of us in the private room and two in the dorm room. The private room had a really comfy bed, towels provided and a fan! It's definitely not a party hostel and everyone was really respectful with going to bed at a good time. Good outdoor space where you could mix with others or take some time for yourself. The communal rooms were cleaned everyday and to a good standard. You got your own fridge and cupboard space based on your room, which was good. Kitchen facilities were decent as well. The reason for the three stars was the bunk beds were quite close together so the dorm rooms felt quite cramped. There was also no privacy curtain around the beds. The water for the shower in the first night unfortunately was luke warm/cold. The other nights it was a bit temperamental but mostly warm. It would be good to have more showers as well. The location was really good though and there is a small car park outside the building bur then plenty of room...
Read moreI can't recommend this place enough, it's probably the best hostel I've stayed in New Zealand so far.||It warrants such high praise due to the extremely friendly, helpful staff, the comfy beds, the better - than average bathroom facilities and the spacious food storage.||But best of all, is that it's all converted from a house.||Because it's converted from a house, the main building especially, which contains the reception, kitchen and indoor lounge area, is well... very homely.||It's a fantastic place to crash out on the various sofas in the later hours of the day, gather by the dinner table to discuss travel ideas and plans with the fellow residents, or just to relax after a frantic day.||I look forward to coming back here when I return to Wanaka, there's nowhere else I'd rather stay.||P.S ||Sadly, I did not take any photos or videos of significance while here, I'll make sure...
