A very poor experience - fortunately there are lots of alternatives!
The room lacked useful amenities - no fridge (which would've been useful to keep sandwiches etc. cold ready to take out on excursions or to keep some water cool), no kettle, no phone etc. More importantly, there was no safe. I thought this was especially poor for such an expensive hotel stay compared with any major European cities. Instead of a wardrobe, there was some sort of shelving unit with just four clothes hangers, which was covered in dust. The hotel bathroom was poorly designed and as shower water was not directed towards the plug, the whole area became very wet including clothes meant for changing into after the shower. Frankly, it was clearly designed by somebody who has never been to a hotel.
We had an issue with our door lock. When we eventually spoke to somebody about after being locked out of our rooms, the member of staff said that the battery was low on the lock and just laughed. This combined with the lack of a safe meant that we had little trust staying there. The issue with the lock not working, beeping, and taking a long time to recognise the key card continued for all of our stay.
The staff - in one word - appalling. Very unprofessional and inexperienced. At times there was nobody around at all - like when we tried to inform staff that our key card was not working. I had to walk off to find a member of staff but actually I found 4 in the bar drinking. I would say that the desk was unattended half of the time we entered or exited, as was breakfast. I had to ask for the tea and coffee in the lobby to be sorted out as on our first day it was just a messy table with no milk, a few paper cups, barely any sachets left etc. For the price you would expect firstly your own facilities in the room and secondly a coffee machine in the lobby like there is down the road at Scandic Neptune where we had the pleasure of waiting for our excursions and transfer (their desk was also attended, I should add!).
The hotel would not store our luggage for us on our final day, instead they offered to watch over it if we left it in reception. Unfortunately we had little choice but to do this. When coming back briefly to the hotel to rest before heading out for lunch, the desk was again unattended with nobody looking after the luggage.
Breakfast - very good food to be fair. Tables were sometimes laid and sometimes not. This goes back to the lack of any management or anybody checking standards. We requested an express breakfast because of an excursion and were given what was essentially a children's packed lunch which firstly was not suitable for breakfast and secondly was very poor value. Breakfast was already being set up when leaving so perhaps choosing some items to put into the bag would've been better.
I have attached pictures of the reception area, unsecure baggage area, and the poor quality...
Read moreSo let’s start with the definition of hotel. It provides lodging. Lodging, according to Wikipedia, is needed for people who travel and stay away from home for more than a day who need sleep, rest, food, safety, shelter from cold temperatures or rain, storage of luggage. The need/requirement of sleep did not happen at this hotel because of the club on the 7th floor. It is clear that hotel management is fully aware of this problem and ask their young front desk staff to deliver the news with there will be a “little bit of noise”. ??? The music is clearly audible in my room, the reverberation of the bass cause the walls to pulse not to mention the screaming drunken clubbers outside. The front desk staff explain it away that this is the price to pay being in the center of Bergen on a Saturday night as apparently the center is one big party on a Saturday night so apparently it wouldn’t matter where I stay in Bergen as this would be an issue anywhere. Really? I was also told I should have known as it is on their booking sites. Indeed, if I had done some proper research I would have found the numerous complaints about this hotel stating sleeping in this hotel on a Saturday night is not possible as well as the hotel’s response, “we are so sorry for the inconvenience.” It is not an inconvenience, it is taking money for a service not provided. When I book a hotel I expect to be able to sleep, otherwise I would spend far less and stay at a hostel. What management should be instructing their staff is to tell guests the truth, you won’t sleep. You have paid for a hotel in a great location, but you won’t sleep tonight and you should have known that before booking. NOT there will be a little bit of noise. I definitely won’t stay at a Magic hotel in the future as this blatant disrespect toward guests speaks volumes to their overall approach to customer service. I travel a lot. I’ve stayed at hotels near airports and other hotels with night clubs and have not had near the noise issue as this hotel. Let me paint the picture. The hotel occupies floors 5, 6, & 8. The club is on the 7th. There is NO escaping the noise. I can Shazam the songs, that is how audible the music is. Currently, Chocolat by Lartiste Feat. Awa Imani is playing. My confirmation said I would have a street view, not sure if that would have been better, but what I got was a courtyard view. The same courtyard the nightclub is over. If the hotel is going to run a club on Saturday night then it should not subject guests to the noise. The plus, because I can’t sleep, I have plenty of time to write this review. Truly outrageous. Worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. A complete...
