If you've ever wondered what it would be like to stay in a hotel from the era of the Portuguese dictatorship that ended in 1974, look no further than the Excelsior Hotel Lisbon. This place is a true time capsule! The furnishings and finishes are so dated, I felt like I was living history.
The bathroom had a delightful aroma reminiscent of a sewage treatment plant. Truly an olfactory experience like no other! The breakfast was another highlight, with croissants that tasted suspiciously like they were made from bread dough. A unique twist on a classic, for sure.
The front entrance was decorated with the finest plastic plants money can buy, adding a touch of artificial nature to the ambiance. The lighting throughout the hotel was also quite the spectacle. It was so bright it felt like I was being interrogated in an underground car park. Very atmospheric!
On the bright side, the staff were genuinely friendly and the sheets were clean, which almost made up for the rest of the charming quirks. If you're looking for an experience that's truly unforgettable, the Excelsior Hotel Lisbon is the place for you. Just don't forget to pack your...
Read moreMy family and I booked a room for one night in the Excelsior hotel in Lisbon and I was extremely disappointed in everything and in particular the room that we had received. The furniture was old, dusty and broken (including uncomfortable beds, and filthy walls and windows), the water coming out of the sink was a light shade of yellow and therefore revolting and the hotel itself was filled with an extremely unpleasant smell, making it impossible for my family and I to remain in the building any longer than a couple of minutes. The hotel staff showed and offered us alternative rooms. These however were in a similar unacceptable condition which left us with no choice but to leave the hotel and drive back to our hotel ro Algarve. I am very dissatisfied to say the least and would not recommend this hotel to anyone, due to the lack of comfort and poor hygiene which made a stay impossible. Additionally, booking.com, the site I used to book this hotel, was sadly in no way helpful and was not able to support me and the issues we had with the hotel. Defiantly not a hotel that deserves 3 stars and unquestionably a place I would never step...
Read moreIt was a pleasant stay for 4 nights. The hotel is very close to the city center, and the check in and check out are easy. Staff are good, service is perfect so is the breakfast. Many options were there to satiate your stomach. I don't know why's there so many bad reviews but I liked the days I spent there with my elderly parents. One of the cleaning staff was from my country, and had nice conversation with her. Will remember her for a her long time. Our room was really spacious, and clean. I totally recommend this hotel, and have nothing negative to say about it. If you want to talk about the elevator, yes it's small, but people who talked about it certainly didn't experience smaller elevators. Yes, that thing exists, and we have had the first hand experience as well. So, try not to be picky about old rooms, and small elevators or no changes in breakfast. ...
