Checked google maps for somewhere to eat near our hotel and found Betânia just a few minutes walk away. It's not right on the street, but head a little further in and down some steps, and you'll find the restaurant set at the back of a large courtyard. We were quite early for dinner (by Portuguese standards) so there were only a couple other parties when we arrived, but it soon became more busy. We decided to sit inside, near a large mounted TV playing top hits from the nineties and noughties, maybe a little strange, but it made for some great reminiscing! While we were choosing our food from the rather extensive menu, a server came round and offered a selection of starters on a tray. We opted for the olives which were deliciously sharp, and ordered mojitos. For my main I chose one of the traditional house specials of salted cod baked with a coarse cornbread crumb. I found the presentation a little old fashioned, but it was a huge portion and, more importantly, delicious; very garlicky and drizzled with some really good olive oil. It was also quite salty, but I didn't mind as I've had other salted cod dishes where the salt has been completely soaked out of the fish, rendering the resulting dishes rather bland. It came with potatoes and a whole range of other vegetables that were all well cooked (some a touch over) and well seasoned. My friend had the octopus, recommended by the server, in garlic and olive oil and she said it was very good. To finish, we each chose the 'house dessert': crème brûlée layered with a softened biscuit and topped with some kind of strawberry mousse or blancmange and a sweetened cream, very decadent and rich. This was our first dinner in Lisbon and a really great experience. Service was friendly and helpful, and the meal was delicious, as well as great...
Read moreWe had the most relaxed, happy, and delicious dinner at Betânia tonight! The owner was friendly and easy-going, and explained the dishes to us in English. We had a toddler in our group, and the owner's daughter came out and was a kind playmate for her! But the star of the show was the authentic Portuguese food!
I had the Robalo Grilhado, grilled sea bass, with potatoes and grilled vegetables. Everything was cooked to perfection, and our group picked all the fish we could from the bones. One of the best fish dinners of my life!
My husband had Arne Porco Alentejana, pork in a very tasty paprika-type sauce with clams and pickles, carrots, and potatoes. Wow! We asked for the recipe but it is a secret of the chef.
We feel very lucky to have found this hidden-away, cozy gem of a restaurant and highly recommend it for travelers looking for a kind and authentic...
