We knew about The Great American Disaster when we were leaving Lisbon, few minutes after we took the road so we decided to visit the place next time we were in the city. So this is what we did.
First of all, the restaurant name kinda checks out, according to its location (it's a disaster to find where to go). Although it's placed in a very prestigious place (at Marques de Pombal plaza), its entrance is really hidden (this is why we weren't able to visit the place during our first stay in Lison), making it really difficult to be noticed for those who doesn't have keen eyes. You have to enter some sort of building lobby, which was empty, with no open stores (it was a Saturday). There was a security guard inside a room (who was playing freecell lol) who helped us and pointed the right direction (which was upstairs).
Although there were a good number of tables, the place was empty, which was good because it meant quick service. It didn't take long to have our order taken: I ordered a steak with 2 kinds of mustard and my wife ordered a Margherita pizza. We also ordered a portion of fries with cheddar, a vanilla milk shake, a mug of beer and garlic bread.
The pizza was very good, although I can't help thinking it's a frozen pizza, like those sold in supermarkets. Again, very good and tasty but clearly not homemade/artesanal so, not worth the price charged. The fries were ok, but I felt a mild flavor on it that resembled fish (I think they used the same oil to fry it). My steak was very large (not thick, just large) and, although it was very tender, it really didn't feel like an american steak. The mustard sauce was tasty, but not how I imagined it would be. There was nothing special about the garlic bread. It really looked like frozen breads (those we buy at the supermarket) with butter, garlic and oregano. There was also another portion of fries with the steak so I miscalculated it a little bit, having to take away part of our food.
So, if the food wasn't that good, why the 4-star rating one might be asking. Well, Portugal is known for not having the "most polite" or "most cheerful" table service around Europe (maybe around the world), and in this matter, this place rocked! Both waitresses were extremely cheerful and provided top notch service so this rating only...
Read moreThis place is my favourite!!! "The Great American Disaster" is the most amazing place I've ever been! The food is very fresh and tasty! And I'm also very happy that the portions here are big, and hamburgers always come with french fries! And this cafe also has very tasty tea! And the fact that they always bring several sauces to any dish is just the cherry on a top! The staff is super sweet and friendly! I regularly visited this cafe for a while and the waitress remembered my order! It was super sweet and I felt very very special! The atmosphere and decor of the cafe are giving so much retro beauty! It's like I'm in a time machine going back to the fifties! Oh, this wonderful retro music from the speakers, and the colorful retro posters, The chairs, seats, tables, and even the menus look themed! It all just bring such a pleasant nostalgia feeling (Even though I never lived in the 50s)! And also special thanks for the giant panoramic window with the most beautiful view and for the fact that there is a mirror in the hall💕💕 Please show me the person who designed this place, I need to kiss their talented hands!! The cashiers, waiters and the cook behind the transparent wall are very smily and friendly! Every time I visit this place I feel very special, beloved and pampered ! 💕 I wish this wonderful place to bask in glory and prosperity! Big thanks for everyone, who works there and made this place so...
Read moreI would have loved to say that I had an amazing experience, being that this was gonna be my first diner experience, but as the name suggests , it was indeed a great American disaster. I was really disappointed, It was my friend's birthday and it would have been polite for her to have a really nice meal to make it extra special. Starting off with the seating, although it is really appealing it was really not comfortable. There were four of us in a booth and we had to alternate legs to remain at least a little comfortable. The glasses of water which were served were stinking like stale milk, which made the water taste really bad, it was sad to say that we didn't even enjoy the water. I had a burger which came with chilli and although I admit I didn't know that chilli is beans, the burger really wasn't good and it was not because of the chilli. The onions were unbearably sweet, we all felt like we were having a dessert. With having a burger the least you can expect is to at least have some nice crispy fries and and it was again disappointing, they were really really soggy. I am sad to say that the only thing we enjoyed was the cocktail sauce and I can make that at home in 2 minutes. We should have known that we weren't going to enjoy the experience because we were complaining even before the food came. I will say that you'll at least do one thing, which is to live up...
