Estufa Fria - A Greenhouse Wonderland with a Mosquito Flashback
Tucked away in the heart of Parque Eduardo VII, Estufa Fria is one of those hidden gems that makes you wonder why you haven’t been before and then immediately start planning your next visit. Even better? Free entry on Sundays between 10H00 and 14H00, which is basically nature’s way of saying, “Come in, we won’t charge you for the joy.”
Inside, you’ll find three distinct biomes -cold, hot, and sweet (yes, sweet, and no, it’s not a dessert room, sadly). Each greenhouse is a botanical passport, with plants from Asia, Africa, and places that sound like they belong in a fantasy novel. The hot greenhouse gave me serious South African semi-arid vibes, complete with mosquitoes that were clearly trained in guerrilla warfare. Vicious little nostalgia bites.
But the real magic? The lush greenery, the gentle water features, and the peaceful hush that makes you forget you’re in the middle of a bustling city. It’s a reminder of what can be achieved when humans and nature collaborate, and also a great place to hide from your inbox for an hour or two.
Verdict: Estufa Fria is a botanical escape, a mosquito-powered memory lane, and a green lung in the heart of Lisbon. Highly recommended for plant lovers, peace seekers, and anyone who enjoys a good greenhouse with a side of...

Read moreI was pleasantly surprised to find such a beautiful Botanical Garden in Lisbon, after visiting the disgraceful Botanical Garden in Ajuda ( Belém tropical garden ) and The National History Museum Botanical Garden in Principe Real. This Botanical Garden In the heart of Lisbon was fantastic. The whole garden is hiden within a metallic structure designed at the turn of the 19th to 20th century being therefore over 100 years old. Nestled within an old quarry. The roof is made of slits of wood that let just enough light through to protect the tropical and temperate plants from the strong heat in the Summer, creating a cooler, shaded climate. It's a visually breathtaking place, I was mesmerized even though being used to Kew Gardens or Wisley gardens in UK. The collection is wonderfully maintained, really outstanding work I wouldn't say any of the plants are rare, most being common houseplants or plants you can easily obtain however here they are kept and displayed in their mature sizes, in the best conditions. Free entrance Sundays and Bank holidays from 9 am to 2 pm. The downside for me was that there are no coffee shops or anywhere to buy food or drinks so take everything with you. There are toilets but they aren't...
