The Fuzzy Log is kind of an upscale hostel. It is not cheap, but it consistently delivers high quality. As some other reviewers have said, it was a lot better than I expected it to be.
This review is based on four nights in May 2023.
A word about the guests: This is a fairly expensive "hostel," so the clientele skewed quite a bit older. It's also a big place, so it wasn't just older people; everyone was represented-- young people in groups, families with small kids, families with grown kids, retirees, couples. It was a very pleasant mix, and everyone seemed to get along very well.
The hostel is not located in the historic center, but it is on a main street that goes from the train station to the main square and the famous triple bridge. It's at about the halfway point on that street, so this means about 400-500 meters gets you to the train station or the old city center. Ljubljana is a small town and you can walk anywhere from the Fuzzy Log.
The public spaces are fantastic. They are VERY spacious and offer lots of options-- rooftop terrace, large common kitchen, tables outside that kitchen, dining room, several collections of lounge style tables and chairs. They are clean and in good condition. The bathrooms are also large, clean, and well designed. The showers have a small changing area in each one.
I stayed in the "Double Bed Cabin," and was in both an upper bunk unit and a lower bunk unit. It was fine. Again, it is very well designed. You have a small amount of floor space, a large double bed-- either low, just above the floor or high like a loft-- and a useful large shelf/closet unit. There are outlets and USB ports and small lights for each bed. It is air conditioned, but I never figured out how to adjust it (maybe you can't).
The staff are fantastic. To a person, they were responsive, friendly, and helpful.
I would definitely stay there again, though only if alone. The bed would easily work for two, but not the floor space.
There is very little not to like about the Fuzzy Log, but here are a few things that could be better.
The upper double bed cabin units are reached by tubular metal ladder rungs. They are very uncomfortable for bare feet. So I ended up wearing slippers to climb, then throwing the slippers on the floor, since I didn't want them in my bed. That made going down uncomfortable. This is a design flaw that should be fixed by replacing the rungs with flat steps or by encasing them in rubber or something else that is softer than round metal tubes on bare feet. The mattresses are thin and a bit worn out. They are comfortable enough, but a bit concave.
This is a minor thing, but not so minor after four days-- The paper towel machines in the men's bathroom were jammed far more often than they were operative. They were CONSTANTLY jammed and did not dispense paper. I resorted to taking paper towels from the kitchen to the bathroom so that I'd have one to dry my hands. This should be easy to fix, and the hotel should fix...
Read moreThis review is about the “hostel” part where we are currently staying. Quotation marks because ibis doesn’t describe and introduce the cabin part of the hotel as a « hostel » on their website, but was presented as such by the staff to some official people visiting the hotel while we were there. We probably should have paid more attention, and ibis should pay more attention and act on customer’s comments about the cleanliness of the bathrooms and common areas of the so-called « hostel ». I don’t even know if this could be described as cleanliness when it should be described as dirtiness. The state of the shared bathroom and toilets is atrocious and so disrespectful to the customers. As you will notice on the pictures attached to this comment, the bathroom has not been cleaned since the 5th of August. There are hairs, brown and white stain marks everywhere. You’re actually in luck if you go in the bathrooms and it’s not flooded. The toilets have urine and faeces marks on the seats and urine around the toilet. The only thing that the staff does in there is emptying the bins and filling up the soap. My boyfriend and I are currently dreading the idea of showering or even going to the toilets. The shared kitchen must be also described: a dishwasher which is as dirty as a bin, cutlery and crockery which cleanliness is questionable. Besides, the kitchen is too tiny for that many people using it! The fridge is way too small, how do they expect people to fit their food in it? I have never seen such a dirty hotel in my life, and such disrespect for the customers staying. Ibis is part of the Accor hotel group which is one of the biggest hotel groups in the world, you can’t tell me that they can’t pay for staff to keep the amenities clean at least once a day. Real hostels welcoming hundreds of customers everyday are more capable in keeping a place clean than this ibis. If I have to state one good thing about this hostel, I would say the location makes up a tiny bit for the rest. The bed is confortable, though we had to clean the storage and bedside table because they were sticky, and the floor was stained a bit everywhere and found someone’s fake eyelashes. You can also find a hanging rail in the closed which weirdly doesn’t come with hangers. Maybe ibis should pay more attention to details. I would never recommend this...
Read moreWorst hostel/hotel experience I’ve ever had im my life. My wife and I booked a private room in the hostel area (which was ridiculously overpriced, even for high season) within the hotel, there was a mattress on the floor with absolutely no ventilation and one small vent for air conditioning in the entrance that we didn’t benefit from whatsoever because we were sleeping on the floor opposite side where we had to lay down. There was also a very bizarre lighting system that was really difficult to figure out that made it seem like we were in some very bad nightmare of a nightclub. It had no normal lighting, just shades of red blue green etc. there was also a large bulkhead right above our heads that we later found out that was the couple next door we’re sleeping right directly above us. Everything in the hotel is made of particle board which is not proper code for building rooms in any hotel anywhere in the world, especially Europe. The rooms only have usb outlets and one regular outlet so if you need to charge multiple things that doesn’t use usb to charge then forget about it All of the staff were very rude and pretty out of it for the most part. We thought that they had breakfast included in the ridiculous price of this place so we started filling a plate where one of the staff asked us what are room number was and we told him and he said “are you with the hostel?” Then took the plates out of our hands and threw the food in the trash and told us it was 15€ for a pretty mediocre breakfast. The following day I went to buy a few beers from the reception and the receptionist told me it was cash only. When whereas when we first checked in we saw people buying drinks from the same cooler with a card. The only good thing about this place is the location which is a few minute walk from the train/bus station. I would NOT recommend staying here, overpriced rubbish with nothing special in terms of amenities and incomprehensible prices for a hostel (even for a...
