I arrived at the hotel on Wednesday the 9th February 2022 for a two night stay. Let me begin with the fact that i chose this hotel on the basis of my previous experiences with boutique hotels in Durban and Cape Town, and i had stayed in local hotels such as Fire and Ice as well as Southern Sun. Menlyn boutique hotel is small, cute and overall beautiful with some aesthetics. I booked a standard room and i liked it, it comes with a unique design. I came to the hotel for writing and its such a good space for that especially during the day. I appreciate the excellent service of all the staff members, i will mention those i still remember. The housekeeping lady who cleaned my room, the guy who fixed my TV, Ronald and Caroline from the restaurant and Masindi from the reception.
What i did not like and i think requires improvements are the following things;
The WhatsApp line to contact reception, housekeeping etc. is not efficient. I checked in at around 14:00 by 14:41 i sent a message requesting assistance with the network and smart TV in the room. I was only assisted at around 17:30. In the morning of the 10th it took staff 30 minutes to respond to my text on my request for iron and a board.
The menu is limited and serves smaller portions, i remember asking one of the staff if the menu in the room was different to that of the restaurant, wondering that i would have more option from the restaurant.
I think i will give it another try later in the year and see if there are significant changes and would actually go for executive room in order to get a different...
Read moreA gem hidden parallel to the N1 North and opposite the Menlyn Shopping Centre. It is very easy to find if uouvlusten to the directions just after you pass the international hotel school. The Black Bamboo Restaurant is 1 of a kind. The colours of the hotel and restaurant are neutral and wood which is very kind to the eye but eye catching at the same time. It has a calming effect and a very fresh aroma in the air with the spa hidden at the corner as you walk past to the restaurant. My friend and I enjoyed both our main meal and dessert. I had the pork fillet with red cabbage and pickled onion and my friend had the roast duck with mash potatoes. My dessert was panacotta lemon meringue and she had lemon sorbet. The staff is very friendly and warm, from the security at the front gate to the reception area also not forgetting the waiters in the restaurant and the cleaners too. Everyone greets which makes this hotel homely and special. A home away from home. That's how I felt for the few hours I spent with my friend here. She tells me she chose the hotel from the good reviews she read about and she was not disappointed one bit. Keep up the good work and continue to make your guests feel welcome and at home. I could not have asked for any better way than spend my birthday at the black bamboo restaurant with my childhood...
Read moreFirst time I stayed I was quite happy. Have to edit that review however.
A lovely venue spoiled by poor service which normally indicates poor management. We've stayed here 3 times over the past 2 months because we enjoy the venue and had expectations that maybe our previous experiences were an anomaly. Arrived this time with no one at reception, tried to do self check in (this is something one would expect at a motel) which didn't work and eventually someone showed up and assisted us. Beautiful room with all the amenities one could wish for. Went down for a drink in the quart yard where were approached by a staff member who reeked of alcohol and was clearly inebriated. He (sloppily) managed to pour us some wine. On our return on Monday we had to get a new room card from reception. Again, no one there. The staff from the pizza cafe tried to reach them via phone but to no effect. They then went off searching for the receptionist who appeared 15 minutes later. Drinks again Monday evening in the quart yard. After about 20 minutes and much waving to catch someone's attention, we went inside and asked for service. I'm sad to say, we shall not return and it's hoped that the owner will read this and do something. Blows my mind how you invest this much in creating a beautiful hotel and then throw it away through...
