I had to make a last minute change. Hotel charged a penalty of $85. Then blamed it on the third party booking agency which apparently was not true. It’s totally at their discretion. Didn’t offer any kind of compensation like a free drink or a meal or something. I find that off putting from a business that’s supposed to be customer service oriented and supposedly values customers.
UPDATE: So you admit it is your policy and it is at your discretion whether you refund, even if partially, the money. This is most certainly not what I was told when I arrived.
I understand last minute cancellations are bad for business and if the hotel was sold out I could understand how that would result in your losing money. However, the hotel was not sold out and you could’ve shown some grace - offer a partial refund, a meal, a drink. Anything. But you did not. So go ahead and keep the money. Enjoy it.
Also, missing a flight is not even close to the same thing as having to change a hotel reservation. Even so, many time airlines would work with their customers on a partial refund or discounted price on a future flight. Why would people travel at all if airlines and hotels refused to work with customers in the event plans need to change?
Final update: I get it—policies are policies. But when a hotel isn’t full and still chooses to keep $85 rather than offer so much as a drink, it stops being about policy and starts being about priorities. If this is how they define hospitality, travelers...

Lovely hotel in a lovely town
This is a nice hotel tucked away in a nook down an alley. Our room spacious enough for the 3 adults in our party. The facilities were either recently upgraded or they do a really good job of keeping the place up. Not a big deal but the poor air-conditioning struggled with the 100F (about 38C) outside temperature (not to mention the 3 adults).
The amenities were modern and the bathroom was fully furnished - towels, soaps, shampoos etc. The hotel has a couple of elevators; useful when you are dealing with luggage. The terrace bar is a nice touch. You can enjoy a panoramic view of Toledo against a sunset while you are sipping your drink or cooling off with an ice-cream.
Our room rate included a breakfast. It was wonderful. Not your generic fare. We enjoyed it. (See attached picture of breakfast hall)
Toledo is a small town and this hotel is ideally located near (5 min walk) Plaza Zocodover which is the hub of a lot the activities.
If you are driving you can park at the Garage Alçazar; it’s about a 3 min walk from the hotel. Tell the front desk that you are parked there. The voucher they give can be used to reduce the daily rate from 18Euro to 15Euro. Speaking of the front desk, everyone we interacted with was very friendly and spoke pretty...
Read moreThis hotel is in a great location. It is close to the Alcazar, cathedral and Zocodover plaza. Because it is a very old building converted to a hotel, the rooms are a bit small, but they are clean. It also means that the HVAC is not the most efficient or user friendly. As soon as we would open the balcony door, the AC turned off, even within a few seconds. We also had to keep a room key in a slot in order for it to work .If you are sensitive to scents, this is not a good choice. Their cleaning products are a highly scented floral product. We kept our balcony open when in our room and asked them not to clean our room during our stay. If you are there on a weekend, be aware that the open public area outside the hotel is used for weekend concerts. They did end at 11 p.m., but it was very loud. The hotel had no control over that, but just be aware. If you stay here, I suggest you include the breakfast. It was an excellent buffet with numerous healthy choices in addition to delicious pastries. Because Toledo is a small old city, hotel options are a bit limited. Carlos V is a good choice due to the location as long as scents do...
