Rich Lanna House — Hotel in Chiang Mai Province

We had a good stay at Rich Lanna House in November 2024. The staff was friendly and helpful, even assisting us in booking a visit to an ethical elephant sanctuary (no riding), which we greatly appreciated.

Everything was perfect until the last night when we started packing. My girlfriend had been using the in-room safe to store her passport and some cash. While the safe worked perfectly the day before, on our final night, the password we set stopped working.

It was already late at night, and after struggling for a while, I decided to try the default "0000" code. Surprisingly, the safe opened. My girlfriend's passport was still there, but some cash was missing. While we don't want to make accusations, we are quite certain about the amount that was originally there.

What felt particularly strange and concerning was that the safe functioned properly during our entire stay, yet suddenly stopped working on the last night. It appeared as though someone might have accessed it using a master key or reset the code.

This experience was very unsettling and left us with an unpleasant impression during an otherwise fantastic trip. I feel this situation was unprofessional and undermines trust...

Hidden costs!

We booked on 5 Jun 2016 to stay from 17 to 21 Dec 2016 after reading the reviews on Rich Lanna House. Due to some personal reasons, we decided to cancel all our bookings on 27 Jun, including Rich Lanna House. It is then that we realised that Rich Lanna House imposed a cancellation cost of THB 1,971!!

At the time of booking, the special conditions only gave the following "CANCELLATION: If cancelled or modified up to 7 days before date of arrival, 100 percent of the first night will be charged. If cancelled or modified later or in case of no-show, 100 percent of the first night will be charged." No indication of the hidden cancellation cost!

We are frequent travellers, and for extensive periods at times, and this is the first time that we are faced with a cancellation cost that is not told to us prior to making our reservation! It would definitely be a hotel we will avoid at all cost when we can visit Chiangmai again.

When I called them up, they attributed the cancellation cost to a glitch in the online reservation system which I have been using frequently. The provider confirmed that there was no such glitch.

Be forewarned if you are considering Rich...

Had a really great 4 nights stay at Rich Lanna House. The hotel location is great, walking distance to lots of places. The lovely reception ladies organised our taxi to the airport as well as flagging a taxi down and fixing a price to take us to Wat Phra That Doi Sthep, wait for us to look around the temple and bring us back. Breakfast was lovely and fresh. The hotel arranged for us to have our clothes laundered, which was really handy! So we started our 2nd week with all clean clothes. We found the hotel very quiet we rarely saw or heard other quests which was nice. Our room was up quite a few stairs, which was wasn’t a problem for us. Our room had loads of character which we loved. It wasn’t massive but there was enough storage for us. And the suitcases fitted perfectly under the bed out of the way. We had some amazing experiences in Chang Mai which we highly recommend, a cookery class called the Thai and Akha cookery class and a day with the elephants at the Elephant Nature Park.
