I don’t normally stay in Bed and Breakfasts due to my previous outdated experiences of them in rural Ireland several decades ago. This experience may change that. I had a superb and warmest welcome. I was blown away by how beautiful the place is. I had my assistance dog, Precious, who was also given a warm welcome. The breakfast was great value, very delicious, in fact, it was my first real meal in a very long time as I suffer from anorexia, the presentation tempted me to eat and I did. The dining room is beautiful, beautiful dishes, better than a 4 star hotel. There are inspirational pictures around the place and the atmosphere is that of a homely environment. The price of the accommodation is very reasonable. Plenty of room in your room to hang up your clothes. (I was backpacking and had a lot of stuff.) The linen was soft and comfortable, not like what I will be spending the next three weeks in a tent embracing and braving the weather! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. It’s a 10 minute walk to the station and very close to the town/city centre.

Great B&B in the centre of Carlisle. The owner is a really friendly woman. Breakfast was sublime. We stayed in room 4 and found it to be very clean, however there’s a slight issue with the en-suite door; at the bottom the wooden little ledge has come away, so you’re likely to stub your toe on it. The bed I found to be a little hard for me, but that’s personal preference. I still managed to sleep well 😊 What I didn’t particularly like is to gain access to the property you need to key in a code for the door. I will say the owner is happy to give that to you in person if you’d like. We tried to check out online but found the website to be a tad confusing, however we were told to leave the key on the sideboard in the entrance hall. Parking is free, you’re given a pass from the owner and parking is round the corner on Compton Street. I don’t know if gets busy when schools are back so we always found an empty bay the time we were here. Would stay here again, though. Highly recommended.

The photos already posted by others do show a true reflection of the rooms - clean, modern and spacious. Very close to the town centre which is great. Payment is expected over the phone prior to visit, parking is via a permit collected from the premise and with luck you can find a space in a nearby side street. Emails sent to the premise prior to visit have been ignored. Looking at the recent reviews, they were done prior to the university returning as the majority of the premise seems to be used by students with noise and mess abound in the corridors.

I absolutely LOVED my stay at Cartref! I can't recommend it enough- it's a short walk from the train station and you can easily walk into the town centre. I was in Carlisle for a gig at The Old Fire Station, and found the guest house to be in a great location as it didn't take me too long to walk through town to the venue.||Melanie (the owner of Cartref) is really friendly and welcoming; it is clear she pays great attention to detail with the rooms and needs of her guests. My room was beautiful; spotlessly clean, bright, and airy with a SUPER comfy bed and lovely quality bedding, which was brilliantly white. The en-suite bathroom was well equipped, incredibly clean, with a GREAT shower, plenty of towels, a lovely soft robe, slippers and excellent quality local toiletries. You get plenty of teabags, coffee and hot chocolate in the room by the kettle; there's even a mini fridge you can use, which had bottles of water and fresh milk for a cuppa on arrival. |The breakfast menu has plenty of choice; it was really tasty, freshly prepared and served in the very pretty dining room. The reception area is pretty and nicely presented with plenty of useful info- there is also a really handy book in the bedroom containing all the information you need for your stay with great recommendations for things to do/places to eat in the local area. |I highly recommend Cartref and will definitely be booking to stay there again next time I...

I arrived at about 6:30 pm. The weather was cold, close to zero. The owner Melanie carried out the check in procedure through the intercom (very strange). She said she was outside and would be back in 10m. Inside it was tidy and with character and pretty cold, to be honest a couple of degrees better than outside. I went to the room which was nice but very cold. All heating was turned off, assuming trying to save on bills to maximise profit. Melanie showed me how to turn on the radiator, success. The room was good size and would take ages to warm up. I waited until 9 pm, the room was even colder as the radiator was off again. At this stage I realised the heating is controlled by the owner from their quarter downstairs. I talked to her daughter, presumably, and she said she will turn the heating on. I asked if I could have a second heater, she said she would double check, whatever that meant. I went back to the room and the radiator started to warm again. I was still sitting next to the radiator waiting for the room to warm up so that I could freshen up and get ready to bed but by 11pm I realised the heating was off again. This frustrated me but I was reluctant to disturb Melanie and her family so late. As I am working the next day, I booked a room in another hotel and l left. I asked for a refund but Melanie refused, She cares more about money and profit than the comfort of the guests,...

We found ourselves in a bit of a pickle due to major disruptions on the Avanti West Coast line. Trying to get from Glasgow to London. Long story short, the day was running out and we ( family of 4 plus daughters friend,) were rapidly running of options for a place to sleep with no availability at Preston or Lancaster. We had headed back up the road on the train and thought we'd see if there was any availability anywhere in Carlisle to enable us to try the trip the next day. As it turned out, there was nothing in the town centre bar this gem of a place. I called the owner from the train and she had her last 2 room options available that could just about work for us. The owner ( I'm sorry, I never found out what your name was) was one of the most helpful and sympathetic people I've ever met in hospitality, and did every thing she could to make sure we had a place to stay. Not only that, but the rooms were lovely, clean, comfortable and it's obviously that this guest house takes it's promises seriously. If every business in the UK took their customers needs to heart the way that Cartref Guest House did, the country would be in a much better place. It might seem a bit dramatic, but the situation we had found ourselves in made me start wondering if there are guardian angels dotted around the country to help at times of need. Thanks again Cartref...
