My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights over the Spring bank holiday weekend. Room was very nicely decorated. The bed was a very large king size. Very comfortable and nice linen bedding. We slept well every night. Good shower. TV had all the sports channels, which was a great bonus. Nice bathroom with good shower and big fluffy towels. The air con was a bit hit and miss but the excellent staff did all they could to make us comfortable.
The breakfast was superb with lots of choice. I had the full English every day. The poached egg done to perfection as was the bacon. All items on the plate were good quality. Service was superb.
We also had food on a couple of evenings and everything we ate was superb.
Every member of staff we encountered were friendly and efficient. They all seemed very happy to be providing an excellent service and seeing the customers appreciating their great service.
The excellent service and wonderful quality of food and accommodation made our weekend
We won't be staying anywhere else when we return to Exeter.
Thank you everyone who served us. You...

I had a beef roast and the meat was plentiful and mostly well cooked, and tender. That's where the positives largley end.
Potatoes were basically raw and had barely seen the oven. They certainly hadn't been anywhere near the beef dripping claimed on the menu.
Yorkshire puddings was well made and tasty, but very greasy.
Spring greens (in mid-September) were ok, as was the mashed root veggies.
Gravy was bland, weak chicken stock, not actual gravy.
Incidentally, I asked for it on the side. I heard the wait loudly pontificating at the pass about what the point was as going to pour over anyway. The reason is is because I only wanted a little gravy, not my meal swimming in it like your menu states your roasts are. This was a good thing for 2 reasons:
A) your gravy is an insult to the name B) the beef was good and didn't need to be masked under that bilge.
Pint of coke, no ice. Barman (large hirsute fella)...
Read moreI contacted City Gate about a staff end of year party. I then had a phone call with John, the events manager, who was really friendly, gave great advice and I booked the cellar bar for exclusive use. Pre ordering the food and drinks was easy with the link emailed to me and John was kind enough to advise me on which food to order and how many platters I would need so we didn't over spend. On the night John and the staff greeted us and offered to move tables and chairs to allow us a bigger dance space. The food arrived, and we were blown away. There was a lovely selection, beautifully presented with enough for us to fill our plates and go back for more. The staff throughout the night were attentive and friendly and created the perfect atmosphere for us to enjoy a much need night of fun after a very busy school year. Thank you so much John and the wonderful staff...
