Booked a night away for my partner and I through secret escapes, upon arrival the receptionist who was friendly told me that they did not have my booking. My partner and I went back to the car while I contacted secret escapes, after around 10-15 minutes they had the booking, I was charged £50 for a pre authorisation, I asked if that would be a credit to the room and if I could charge drinks to the room and then that £50 would cover what was charged, I was told that is how it would work. we went to the room which was on the third floor. When using the elevator the doors were very slow to open and close, the elevator was quite creaky but was definitely better than using the stairs.
Upon entering the room my first thought was the bed was quite small compared to other hotels I’ve stayed in and was also not really comfortable, the overall cleanliness of the room was what I’d consider to be below average, most surfaces were fairly clean but there was small amounts of lint on the tiled floor.
Next we checked out the bathroom was and it looks fairly updated, water pressure was decent, my biggest gripe with the bathroom was that being an overweight gentleman the toilet was too close to the door.
As part of the package a glass of Prosecco was included which we were able to swap for a pint of cider each which was nice, the staff in the restaurant and bar were friendly.
The meal was something I would compare to a microwave meal, I had the pork loin which was two very thinly cut slices of pork with some roast potatoes and some mixed vegetables, all of which were not what I’d expect from a restaurant, the only saving grace was how tasty the sauce was. My partners meal was meant to be slow cooked beef with mashed potatoes the beef was dry and the mash seemed powdery. For dessert we had chocolate brownies I was asked if I wanted ice cream with mine I said yes please, it came out with no ice cream, but boy did it need it because this plain brownie was dry and crumby I didn’t finish it.
After dinner we had a few cocktails in the bar all of which were lovely highly recommend the cocktails. Charged them to the room and off we went to bed.
We came down for breakfast and helped ourself to the continental buffet, a waiter came and asked for our hot food order, my partner ordered haddock with poached eggs and I ordered the English breakfast, rolling theme from last my breakfast consisted of a single rasher of bacon, a single rubbery egg, and a single hash brown, toast could be made yourself on the buffet, my partner did not finish her breakfast either as she said she didn’t enjoy what was served.
After a fairly bad nights sleep if I’m honest we went to check out and then was asked to pay for the cocktails from the night before £32, I said but the pre authorisation should cover that? She said no the pre auth isn’t for that, I said the money was still taken out of my account, I paid the £32 for the drinks and we left.
Honestly I wouldn’t stay here again, we stayed at village hotels a few months ago and even with the fire alarm going off at 7am that was a...
Read moreWe came to this hotel using a wowcher coupon, 1 night stay and 2 course dinner and breakfast included for my 21st Birthday. However we did pay a mid week supplement fee (£55) due to it being June. We picked this hotel to use our voucher as the website looked amazing and boasted great services and great location.
When we arrived we didn’t feel very welcomed, the receptionist wasn’t very helpful about directions around the hotel. She then asked us to pay £10 but we were unsure what for, then explained it was for overnight parking. We booked our dinner, swimming and breakfast slot and went on to our room. We arrived at the room, we were placed on the top floor in the front corner of the hotel. The room was standard and was decorated to a nice extent. Some stains were on the bath and dressing table but we kept a positive mindset as it was my birthday and we were so excited. We decided to watch some TV before using the swimming facilities but our TV did not work so we thought to contact reception as stated in all of the welcome packs and emails but there was no phone in the room.
We went swimming, the pool is small but was nice. The jacuzzi was a yellowish colour and colder than the pool so wasn’t enjoyable. Went back to the room for a shower and took forever for hot water to turn on, there was next to no water pressure and a shower that should’ve taken 5 minutes took 30. So felt really disappointed.
We then went for our booked 2 course dinner, the service was bare minimum and we started to notice this could be because we had a voucher and not paid directly as our names were highlighted on lists. The service that was being provided to other individuals was completely different to how we were treated. We weren’t offered drinks, just asked what food we’d like. Then ordered drinks when our mains came as no one had returned to the table, despite there being 4 waitresses. The drinks then came at the end of our meal. The service wasn’t rude in any way, just felt as if there wasn’t any service and that we were an inconvenience. However, the food was lovely and cooked to a very high standard and was thoroughly enjoyed.
We decided to go through to the bar area which is decorated very nicely and there was some live music. This was enjoyable. The clientele were 65+ which didn’t bother us, but I would bare this in mind when booking. Drink prices were good for a hotel! We then returned to our room.
Woke up the next morning and went for breakfast, which was amazing and lifted our spirits. Service was better in the morning but nothing amazing.
I personally felt disappointed with the stay, we booked for my 21st and made this known to the hotel and just wanted impressed with the lack (or no) service that was provided. Food was great. We have used gifted wowchers before and had amazing experiences at other hotels so this really disappointed us. Wouldn’t return which is shame because the way it was presented online looked amazing but does not reflect...
Read moreWe recently enjoyed a wonderful 3-day stay at the Hotel Collingwood, and I'm so thrilled we chose this beautiful hotel. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the stunning décor and the warm, welcoming atmosphere. A special thank you to Oskar for his fantastic welcome and for taking the time to explain everything so clearly – a truly helpful start to our stay! Our family room was a delight – spacious, beautifully appointed, and boasting a lovely sea view. The beds were incredibly comfortable, ensuring a restful night's sleep. While the bathroom was a tad on the smaller side, and we did notice the noise from outside, these were minor points in an otherwise exceptional experience. The room did get a little warm, but the fans provided were a welcome addition. We also appreciated the lovely cleaning lady who efficiently took care of our towel and bin needs. Breakfast was perfectly adequate and offered a good variety. While the continental buffet had a selection of cereals, fresh and canned fruits, yoghurts, juices, water, coffee, jams, and hot drinks, the highlight was definitely the delicious a la carte menu. We enjoyed options like the full English (including a vegan version!), salmon and egg on toast, avocado and egg on toast, pancakes, and croissants – plenty to satisfy everyone. It's also great to know that brunch, lunch, and dinner are available, along with a well-stocked bar and plenty of board games. The spa facilities were a fantastic bonus, especially for our family. Our 3-year-old absolutely loved playing in the pool, although we did find the main pool quite cold. However, the jacuzzi was wonderfully warm and relaxing! My husband also thoroughly enjoyed the sauna. The hotel's location is convenient for beach access, just a 5-6 minute walk away. Do be aware that it's a downhill walk to the beach and uphill on the return, which might be a consideration for some. There is also a bus stop across the street in case you want to take the bus somewhere to the city. Overall, we had a truly happy and memorable stay at the Hotel Collingwood. We honestly feel this hotel is somewhat underrated and possesses the charm and quality deserving of a 4-star rating. recommend it to anyone visiting...
