We had a lovely evening dining at No. 8. We were seated in the back room, with lovely exposed beams on the ceiling, created a nice atmosphere. My wife had a poached pear with blue cheese as a starter, and I had a pulled pork and black pudding croquette. The croquette was nice, although quite big, might have been better as 2 or 3 smaller croquettes to get a better balance of crispy outside and juicy inside. My wife's pear was amazing though. For main course my wife had rump of lamb spiced Moroccan style, which she thoroughly enjoyed as well. I had a chicken roulade, which was very tasty and well-cooked. My risotto was slightly under, but not enough to be a problem. For dessert, my wife had Rhubarb and Custard meringue, which was a bit on the sweet side, but tasty nonetheless. I had an apple charlotte with salted caramel sauce, which was lovely. Surprisingly it was accompanied by a liquorice ice cream, which I hadn't seen as part of the dish on the menu (might have missed it, but don't think so), which was not very pleasant, especially not with the apple. Overall, a lovely bistro dinner with very...
Read moreI visited Cafe No 8 before Covid and really loved the food. They shorten their operation hours after Covid and we finally made it for Sunday lunch today. We had a starter, mains and dessert. The food was just as good as I remembered. Service was good too. This place just celebrated their 20 years' anniversary in York which tells you that they got to be good to last that long given the ultra competitive food scene here. The food was of top quality, refined and cooked with care. We had beef and pork tenderloin and they were so tender. The potatoes were roasted perfectly. And we had a selection of vegetables (Broccolini, Parsnip, Carrots, Spring Onions etc) not over cooked like many places. And I was so glad to try the Dark Belgian Chocolate Truffle with Black Sesame Ice Cream. I love black sesame ice cream but is a rarity to find them in York. I wish I could buy a tub of their black sesame ice cream and bring it home. If you are looking for a place with a relaxed atmosphere, serving non-pretentious and delicious food, I recommend Cafe...
Read moreWe were excited to try the food at Cafe No.8 after reading reviews online that depicted it as a 'find' and 'popular with the locals'. We had the harissa lamb and chicken (sous vide) risotto - both were dry. After already waiting a very long time for our food and as a result, not wanting to send back the lamb, we asked if they might have some form of sauce/jus/gravy, to make it less dry. Unfortunately the chef doesn't seem to grasp that with an open kitchen, you can hear everything he says. We had to listen to him complaining about and belittling the fact that we had requested a sauce/gravy/jus to go with harissa lamb. It was awkward and embarrassing, and I admittedly was furious. We explained the situation to the waitress who was equally embarrassed and apologetic. The food is prepared off-site which is apparently why the lamb was dry, a process that I would suggest needs to be reviewed, along with the attitude of the kitchen. They discounted our dinner but at that stage the damage was done...
