A comfortable pub with the friendly service you can expect from anywhere in York... shame about the food, though. I had a fish sandwich which the waitress assured me was an excellent choice but it was enormously disappointing. The fish itself was nice - cod in a lovely, light, crisp batter - but the bread (the descriptive word for which I've now forgotten but was probably "artisan" or something) was dry and crumbled in my hands. The tartar sauce was meanly scraped across the bottom piece - I could barely taste it - and the other had no moisture whatsoever, so the bread just fell right off the fish. It wasn't a sandwich so much as a small unsupported pile of unrelated stuff. Come on, whack a decent amount of sauce on both slices, or at least put something in there to hold the sandwich together.
At one point the waitress came over to ask if everything was ok, but it's always a bit awkward when that happens in this situation. I mean, the fish wasn't raw, and it had all the ingredients which were listed on the menu, so I couldn't in all good faith have sent it back to the kitchen. It wasn't wrong, per se, it was just a bit rubbish. I'm too British to say "well this is just a really dull, poorly-constructed sandwich". Who does that?!
Nice beer selection, though. The chocolate mint stout was as delicious as you might hope. And it's one of many pubs in York situated in an old Tudor-era building. Hardly unique in this part of the world, but sensitively done, nonetheless.
Definitely worth swinging by for a drink, but I won't be in a hurry to order any food next...
Read moreWish I had discovered this place sooner in my four years of trips to York! We dined here for lunch one day and came back later in the week for dinner & pub quiz. They offer a solid pub menu with prices better than most in the area. The food was fantastic! The atmosphere is authentic and offers a few settings in one location: quiet dining tables great for families, couples, & large groups, a decorative outdoor garden, lively lounge area at the entry/front window sections for libations, upstairs has a unique private dining cove for date night, and rooms to host private large group dining. Our favorite part besides the food was the designated room for pub quiz night (you could actually hear the questions) that has a door/stairs leading to the outdoor beer garden. For those that are pub quiz fans: this one was particularly fun and creative. They had categories that were varied enough for every person on your team to contribute. The music/audio section and the finale of extra point bonanza was fantastic!! The writer for this pub quiz deserves props! The winner Well Yes, we did win!) received a bottle of wine and a prize from the box. It was by far one of our favorite pub quiz nights yet! Well done Eagle and Child! And for those that like hidden gems, there is a room upstairs with the preserved graffiti from the 1960's Rolling Stone's (written in Mick Jagger's...
Read moreAs shown above, lovely pub, good food etc. A family reunion after 14 years we chose this pub. Sadly our evening was ruined at the end of t with the night by the Manager. There were 6 adults & 1 child, we all went to the bar & paid for our food & drinks. My cousin & I were the last to leave as were slow on crutches etc & were told that 1 fish & chip dinner wasn't paid (£16.50)! Everyone had paid & as we were last ones there he followed us outside & insisted WE paid! Outrageous! We spent a lot of money & had photos of our reunion. By the way, there were 3 disabled adults & 1 disabled child in our group. I think they keyed in 7 adult meals rather than 6, & 1 child's meal. They left for Thirsk (sp)? & we are off to Dorset this morning. York was lovely & the people too, except marred by last evening & this manager! & by the way, our cousin had booked our table in advance & they couldn't find the reservation when we arrived - @17.00! So had to squeeze us in as long as we vacated by 20.15. Which we did! So sad that this manager marred our experience on our last...
