As a kid from a working-class family, growing up in Buena Park in the 1990s, staying at the Disneyland Hotel was a dream akin to going to the moon: fantastical and impossible! While the price of this Hotel will be enough to deter most budget-conscious visitors, I can honestly say that setting aside extra cash for a few months to stay in the Disneyland hotel is absolutely worth it! My mother used to say, “Staying at the Disneyland hotel is for rich people, and we will never be able to do that!”. Well, I have that kind of money now, so TAKE THAT, MOM! ||Vibe / Atmosphere:| From the moment you arrive, the Disneyland charm is on full display. The grounds are immaculately kept, and the entrance to the hotel is shaded with palm trees. The décor throughout has a ’60s retro vibe. Then once I entered, I was impressed with the cleanliness and charm, both professional and welcoming at the same time. The decoration is, above all, cleanly designed, and balanced perfectly between “garden” and “concrete”. ||Service / Staff:| At the time I visited, everything was so streamlined that I didn’t have to talk to a single representative to check in! From the Disney App, I was checked in before I even arrived, and my room key was built into the app (and made a delightful magic woosh sound when it opened the door). However, when we did interact with staff at the gift shop and convenience store, they were genuinely interested in our plans while staying at the hotel. And even gave us some relevant tips for visiting during the Halloween rush season. I would have more to say on this, but we simply didn’t need the assistance of the staff much at all! The app automates so many features of your stay that it is easy to be self-sufficient throughout your time here. ||Cleanliness / Comfort:| There is a common theme among reviews I have read that this is an older hotel. And while that is true, the rooms have been refurbished in the last decade or so. And they are kept incredibly clean. Unlike many hotels in the area, these rooms do not appear to show their age nearly as much. There are minor noticeable things like the grouting and size of the tubs that indeed hint at this being built a long time ago in an economy far away, but nothing that detracted from the experience for me personally. The room we stayed in had an excellent view overlooking the front of the hotel, and the wall-to-wall window was an incredible way to let the morning sun into the room. The beds were very comfortable, and the chairs were as well. I rarely use hotel furniture other than the bed, but I was surprised to say I spent a good amount of time just lounging in the chair, looking out the window at the park. ||Food / Amenities (if applicable):| The amenities in the room are the standard that one would expect in any hotel of this caliber (hairdryer, mini-fridge, TV, etc). There were also robes provided, which were just delightful, and of course had the Disney Logo on them. ||What You Did (activities / duration / standout moments):| We stayed at this hotel for four nights. The short walk to the parks, the access to restaurants, the convenience of shops in the lobby, and the overall attentiveness of the staff (not to mention the convenience of the app) made our stay simply wonderful. Each day blends into the next, and we left all of our time and attention to navigating the parks. We did visit the Disneyland Park for three out of the four days, and one evening at the Oogie Boogie Halloween party in California Adventure. That is a truly STANDOUT event, and well worth the special ticket price. Oogie Boogie Bash was the highlight of our stay, to be sure! We did not use the pool during our stay, but I have used it in a previous stay, and it is lovely. While we didn’t spend much time in the room itself, the grounds of the hotel kept the “Disney magic” experience alive for us from the Park to the Room. ||Pros & Cons||Pros: There are MANY pros to staying at this hotel; however, I must say that the unequivocal winner is the proximity to the Disney Property. If you stay at the hotel, you might also get early entry to the park on select days. The security line to get into Downtown Disney is relatively shorter (not always SHORT in the strictest sense) but short-ER than the main security entrance from the public street. The option to take the Mono-Rail from inside the park to the Downtown Disney stop, which is a quarter-mile stroll to your hotel from there, is convenience worth the extra cash? And if you have already used your ticket once that day, you can jump on the monorail and ride it straight into the park, no muss, no fuss. That is a pretty impressive convenience, in my opinion. ||Cons: For me personally, the value is worth every penny. That said, for many people, the main con here will be the price point (which can get as high as $1000 a night for a standard room during peak seasons). For many visitors on a budget, the price is simply cost-prohibitive. That is the main con of staying at this hotel. And to a lesser degree, having to walk all the way through the Downtown Disney property (especially in crowded hours) can be an extra distance you may not want to do after a long day of waiting in lines to get on rides. ||Tips for Future Travelers (optional): | If you are willing to pay the extra money and you can afford it, I highly recommend doing so! That established, even if you have a large budget for your stay, you should keep in mind that food is not included anywhere on the property. The prices of meals can add up, especially if you are staying for three or more days, as we did. My recommendation is to budget for about $100 a day per person if you plan to eat three meals a day (or do your wallet a favor and buy some groceries you can fit in the mini-fridge). I also, of course, recommend downloading the app well in advance of your trip, because you will HAVE to use it for virtually everything. ||Most memorable feeling or moment: | The most enrapturing and honest-to-gods deal maker for me is the Headboards! The headboards may seem like a minor stylistic addition to some, but the “goodnight kiss” feature that lights up and plays wish upon a star is just the Disney Magic special touch that makes staying at this hotel worth it. Playing that thing each night for my partner before bed was the absolute...
Read moreWe just came back from a vacation to disneyland to celebrate my dads 70th birthday. It was always my parents dream to visit disneyland with their grandkids after our initial visit 30 years ago, so our entire family of 9 made the trip. I always had the best memories of my first visit to disneyland and disneyland hotel but this time it was rather disappointing. First of all, my mom send a bunch of emails to the concierge team before our arrival but we never got a reply which was very troublesome. Upon arrival, we had the coldest welcome from the hotel’s security team. I understand there’s probably some reason for the security check, airport style but you can conduct that in a kind manner, welcome guests with smiles, guide them through the process and just be a little bit more accommodating having in mind that some people and families were just travelling for hours to get there. (On our first visit we were welcomed with smiles and some disney characters which of course set the bar high but I would at least expect a kinder approach compared to the grim faces that were just showing me the way like we are at the airport). The same morning, only one of our rooms was ready which is ok as the check in time is at 15:00, so I had to pick up or two suitcases and take the to the room (no one suggested to take the suitcases up to our room). When asked the luggage team to take me to our suitcases I was with my 3,5 yrs old som but the lady manager (Wednesday morning) didnt allow me to take him with me. She was strict to a rule that said only one person should go through and rather suggested i leave my son with my wife who at the moment was holding our 4 month daughter who was crying. I found that to be a terrible experience and rather unfriendly approach - the gentleman who escorted me in the luggage room was actually super kind and apologised for the situation and was trying to be very helpful and accommodating. Getting in the room we didnt find any of the items we requested before our arrival (potty, baby bathtub and a bed barrier - we requested these items both via the application and during check in and we were told yes of course we will make sure to have these items in the room). Coming back to the room and seeing that none of the items were there, I called housekeeping and requested them along with some kid slippers. I was told that the hotel didnt have any of the items but will bring me a pair of slippers. They brought me a kid’s bathrobe instead but we were lucky because the young trainee who brought the items actually spoke better english and when I told her the rest of the items we wanted she was kind enough to bring us all of them (except the barrier which is ok). During our time at the hotel it was just very difficult to have any kind of help for the baby. We asked so many people for some baby food (mashed veggies or fruits) or to help us wash the baby bottles but most of the staff were not very accommodating. I just felt that everyone was just trying to cope with the increased demand and probably what was a full hotel and just didnt want to take on more work. I understand it but at the same time you are catering to families with young children, providing some help with baby food and washing bottles should be a given and you shouldnt let guests feel like you are doing them a favor. We did find in one of the three nights we stayed in the hotel a very kind gentleman who helped us with baby food. Furthermore, we found that there was a language barrier and although a lot of guests came from english speaking countries a lot of the employees did not speak very good english. We also missed some baby/kids amenities in the room (such things cost a minimal amount but make a huge difference in kid’s experience - hence the parents experience) and some basic kid’s/babies food choices in your outlets. Overall I will say it was a disappointing experience and most of all it was the service attitude of a lot of people in the personnel. There were of course some very polite employees which we...
Read moreWARNING - do NOT pay to stay in the Garden Villas at DLH Anaheim! 💔
I want to warn all my Disney Fans about our recent trip at the DLH. The Villas are currently NOT worth it due to electrical issues. During our recent stay in room #0251 (Deluxe Garden Villa) from 9/16/24 - 9/20/24 we did NOT HAVE POWER.
We paid $600+ a night and LOST POWER from 1am-5am during 2 of the 3 nights we were there. We were there to celebrate my toddlers 3rd birthday & he didn't even want to be in our hotel room because he was AFRAID of being there due to the power loss and darkness. My mom (65 years old) tripped & fell on the way to the bathroom because we could not see!
The first time we lost power (9/18 @ 1am), we weren't even aware it was going to happen. We came home from the park after 1am (since we stayed at the park till after closing it's a very long walk from Disneyland Park to the DLH) and came back to a note with a glowstick taped to it saying we would be "without power due to scheduled maintenance". We had to fumble around the room in the dark and couldn't charge our dead phones to use as flashlights. The provided glow stick was basically useless. The food in the fridge went bad. When I called the front desk they're only response was "you were notified about the maintenance" (as if coming home to a note & a glowstick is considered "notified") and didn't offer any solutions or a different room. They told me most guests also didnt have power, but when I spoke to a maintenance worker he said that only rooms on the 2nd floor of the Discovery Tower were experiencing power outages.
The 2nd time we lost power (9/19 @ 130am) we were in our room, watching a movie with my child in bed & we all lights suddenly went out AGAIN. When I called the front desk, they told me we shouldn't be affected (but clearly we were) then put me on hold for 10+ min. When my toddlers started crying because he was afraid of dark & kept trying to leave the hotel room, I decided to walk down to the front desk with my child. To be honest, I was livid. I couldn't find the ridiculously hard to locate front desk and packed my toddlers around the resort at 2am trying to find someone to speak to. Eventually, they did offer us a different room, but it was our last night there & it was in an entirely different tower. So to move rooms were would have to pack in the dark, then relocate to an entirely different area.
We are night people. I work nights at a hospital in a trauma center/emergency room. 1am-5am normally would be the time when most guests are sleeping, but for us that time frame is when we're awake & spending time together. If I was aware and notified of the "scheduled maintenance" at the time of check in i would have chosen a different room. I worked VERY hard to save money & be able to afford this trip. I'm a single mother & quite frankly worked my butt off so my toddler could experience the "magic" for his birthday. But apparently DLH version of a "magical stay" involves using a glowstick to see in your room.
Besides the power issue, we had several other complaints about the Villas. The water never got hot or cold. We took slightly warm showers & brushed our teeth with warm water. The wifi didn't work near our room. Its like a 5 min walk to get to the ice machine from our room. They didn't bring our luggage for hours after checking in. House keeping didn't clean our room until we complained about it. The only options for the TV are to either watch a few basic cable channels or use a QR code to connect your phone/device to stream & mirror your own Disney+ account on the TV. Wouldn't you think a company that makes a revenue of 17+ million dollars A DAY would provide you with in-room disney+ for free?? And since the wifi didn't work we couldn't even connect to the TV most of our stay.
After talking to customer service multiple times, they finally did credit us $400 but our bill was still almost $2k (for 3 nights)
I just wanted my toddler to have an extra magical time for his birthday, not spend $2k...
