EXPERIENCE: Being a Disney product, the exterior the mansion is well-kept with manicured lawns, looking like a stately manor somewhere in New Orleans. The tombstones in the graveyard are etched with the names of Disney Imagineers who designed the attraction.
After entering the mansion, your group is squeezed into a small room for a briefing. The doors close and a ghostly-toned narrative begins informing guests that they're trapped and need to find their way out, though there aren't any doors or windows. All of a sudden, the room seems to "stretch" as paintings on the walls get taller. You're actually in a slow descending elevator which takes you to the loading zone below for the start of the ride.
The haunting room features a belt of "doom buggies" descending from an upper floor in which you get on while the belt is still moving (2 or 3 to a buggy) before being whisked away up another staircase.
The buggies can rotate 360° and automatically swivels toward scenes on both sides of the track. Keep in mind that this ride has been around since the 1970's with special effects from that era, so don't expect mind-boggling special effects. But, what they have isn't bad and works well as the ride has to entertain folks of all ages. You'll see "breathing" doors, a floating candelabra, things moving by invisible forces, a coffin lid being opened by a skeleton, a talking head inside of a crystal ball, ghostly figures dancing in a ballroom, talking busts, and an animatronic graveyard. The frosting on top happens toward the end of the ride. After passing by three hitchhikers, the buggies turn towards mirrors on the wall. A hologram of one of the three hitchhikers is projected into your buggy making it look like the ghost of the hitchhiker is right next to you. That freaked me out as a little kid but is quite entertaining as an adult, lol.

Read moreThe haunted mansion is one of Disney's best rides. It is so popular that you are advised to lightning lane it. I learned as I went inside that they have two stretch rooms.Notably absent when I first walked in was the man's portrait who aged and turned into a skeleton.
You start out in one of the stretch rooms. What's so different about this stretch room is that it is actually an elevator taking you below ground so you will ride the attraction underneath the Disneyland RR.
The ride seemed a bit shorter than what I had been used to but nevertheless you start off in your doom buggy and are taken inside the creepy mansion where the 999 ghosts will begin to materialize after Mme Leota summons them. Perhaps the best part for me was seeing the story of the Hatbox ghost. He appears with the bride as a person and shortly after that you see him move his skull head from his neck to his hatbox.
Check out the ballroom scene. The organ used there is from 20,000 leagues under the sea. You continue through different parts and enter the famous graveyard scene where they are singing "grim grinning ghosts" Listen for the voice of the original narrator of the Haunted Mansion- Thurgood Marshall. His voice is among the busts.
No photography is allowed during your ride. Our doom buggy came to a halt when we were in the graveyard scene and I saw a tombstone named "Momento Mori." Oddly enough that is the name of the gift shop in the Magic Kingdom counterpart. The hitchhiking ghosts have names to them and of course one of the spirits ends up in your doombuggy. As you are leaving and heading to ground level you see the little bride with her iconic phrase, "Hurry back!"
The Haunted Mansion will be all decked out for Halloween and of course recently had a movie with the same name released. While visiting the mansion check out the pet cemetery before you enter. It has some unique...
