My husband and I stayed here for a long weekend, Friday through Monday morning. We reserved the room for 9/21 - 9/24 over a month in advance, and were only able to get an inner harbor view, which was ok, not wonderful. The balcony was not private at all. In fact, we could see right into our neighbors room, as the drapes were open. There are no privacy dividers on the balcony...it would be better described as a wrap around porch.
The room was clean, but dated. The bathroom was very small....no place to put makeup while trying to get ready....very hard to brush hair and blow dry without hitting the wall.
We arrived st 8pm Friday evening, after over a 5 hour drive and were told that the restaurant closes at 830pm. So no dinner was available for our first night. Luckily there was a grocery store a few minutes up the road, so we were able to make a snack. We had a very restless night, as the bed was comfortable, but the pillows were horrible. We both woke up with stiff necks
Saturday morning we decided to eat breakfast at the restaurant. We found the meals pricey, portions small, and the pancake I ordered was cold and not very good at all.
After spending $40 for a lackluster meal, we decided to eat elsewhere for the remainder of our stay.
We then drove to Brunswick to purchase decent pillows and pillowcases so that we could get a decent night's sleep Saturday night.
Sunday morning, housekeeping was knocking on the door at 8:45am....we were still in bed....when I told him to come back later, he asked when he could come back....I guess we should have put the do not disturb sign out Saturday night. We were surprised how early we were awakened on a Sunday.
For the 189 per night that we paid, I think we should have had a decent bathroom. The window by the front door, and the window in the bathroom were reminiscent of those you would find in a mobile home, circa 1970.
The location isn't that great either. .still within walking distance of shops and restaurants, but a long walk. We didn't know that the trolley was running until Sunday. The trolley driver was great...told us where the best places were to eat, and to visit.....it was telling that he didn't suggest Brown 's as a good place to eat.
All in all, I was somewhat disappointed. The posted reviews were so positive, I thought it would be better...
Read moreI cannot say enough good things about this place. The hotel and its marina are run by the kindest people on the planet.
I am always greeted by third-generation owner Tim Brown, who makes sure he has enough help with him to catch my dock lines------he knows that I am often short-handed (or single-handing) and he thus goes out of his way to make sure I get in as easily as possible. Oftentimes his help includes his seasonal renters, because there is a very friendly, almost club-like atmosphere here. It always feels as though I have come home.
This is the kind of place where people put lawn chairs on the docks and watch the sunset. It’s wonderful.
Over the years Tim has loaned me cars (and laughed it off when I inadvertently took off in his mother’s new Lexus instead of the car he’d actually intended to lend me). He has come aboard and helped me with engine problems. He probably saved my husband’s life when my husband fainted and fell into the water.
The marina is super-clean and very well-run-------the lovely flowers atop the pilings are a beautiful touch. There are showers (the men’s is nicer than the women’s) and a laundry. Having the restaurant right there (breakfast and dinner, not lunch) sometimes feels like a true port in a storm when it’s too rainy and miserable to stay aboard.
The marina is located on the quiet side of Boothbay, so it’s a 15 minute walk or so into town. I like the quiet over here. But if you are looking for a party atmosphere, this is not the place for you. There is a bar within the restaurant, but it closes when the restaurant closes-----there is no late-night bar-scene. If your preference is for a bit more late-night liveliness, there are other marinas on the west side of the harbour that would be better for you.
Sometimes it’s impossible to really capture the spirit of a place with mere words, and that’s the way I feel about Brown’s. They are just so kind...
Read moreThis is a quaint hotel that has been in business since world war 2. The rooms are nice sized. The bathtub is wide and the water pressure at the shower is strong. The only thing is that if you are 6 foot or taller, you will have to duck down to wash your hair.
We checked in and they asked us if we were going to have dinner in the restaurant. If that is the plan, they told us to make sure to call for a reservation. Seemed odd at the time. Then I looked at the hours and they close at 8:30. On a Saturday?
So we called and was told that they did not have anything available until 8:00 because they had a function going on. My wife mentioned we were guests at the hotel and suddenly we were able to get 7:00.
Once you enter the dining room, you will notice the ship models everywhere. Most are nicely done and would cost a good buck if you wanted to purchase them today. They are probably something they decorated with 40 years ago.
The other odd thing is that there are these massive speakers hanging off the walls. They are not being used, it just seemed really strange to see speakers that size again. We speculated that if they took them down, they would have to paint the wall.
I got a glenlivet and my wife got a glass of chardonnay. $9.00 each. We then ordered the crab dip. It was good, but they just opened a box of crackers and arranged them along the side of the dish. I would have expected a baguette or similar bread.
I got the seafood Alfredo $32.00, it was very good but I did get tired of the taste of it halfway through. My wife got the mushroom risotto $21.00. It was very good.
We wanted to get a piece of blueberry pie for dessert, but they were out of it. Instead we got the pumpkin bread pudding $7.50. A...
